Photo finalists The water in the Ferdinand State Forest Lake was a chilly 38 degrees Feb. 19, but that didnt stop 151 friends and loved ones of Paul Fischer from jumping, running or skittering into the water. Division 1 Plunge for Paul Eric Tretter, Ferdinand News Category judges comments: Great moment captured at the peak of action. Good work by the photographer to be in front of the action, even though it probably involved getting wet. Division panels comments: Really nice faces and expressions made this a winner. Photographer got his feet wet and went for something different from a pretty common event. The shutter speed is magical, water shows just the right amount of blur but the people are tack sharp. Wonderful moment combined with excellent technique make this a total winner. A firefighter stands among the charred contents of a Cabin Creek homes garage, putting out hot spots in the studio above. Division 2 Hot spots Megan OBryan, Brown County Democrat (Nashville) Category judges comments: Good composition, good mood. Firefighters expression really makes the photo work. Tells the story well. Division panels comments: Photographer worked to get a version you dont see very often. The composition is just perfect, dark areas frame the subject well. This really stood out above the rest. Division 3 Fire Bob Wellinski, The LaPorte Herald-Argus Category judges comments: The photographer accomplished the difficult task of showing both action and context in a spot-news situation. The surreal color and situation simply added to the image. Division panels comments: We appreciated the photographers approach to covering this fire. The use of available light wisely revealed a surreal landscape and the decision to back up allowed greater context than is often delivered in these situations. LaPorte City firefighters knock down flames emerging from a home in the 300 block of John Street in LaPorte, Ind., April 20, 2012. No injuries were reported. Division 4 Football Andrew Laker, The Republic (Columbus) Category judges comments: Great color, great composition. Perfect sports feature photograph. Division panels comments: Striking color and compelling, whimsical composition. The frame is filled in an almost circus atmosphere. Technically strong and hard to look away from. Surreal picture-making at its best. Division 5 Tornado Jeremy Hogan, The Herald-Times (Bloomington) Category judges comments: Powerful emotion and scope of devastation. Feels like the photograph was captured at exactly the right moment. Division panels comments: Horrific breaking news. Photographer is not part of the scene. True, raw emotion injects instant empathy. Its hard to take your eyes off the image. It scares me to think that scene could be played out anywhere. Columbus Easts Caleb Maley, facing, and Ryan Leffler show off their breast cancer awareness-themed pink socks as they connect on a flying bump during team introductions before their final regular season game. David Shipley carries his dog, Tater, which he found under the family home, a house destroyed by a tornado, next to the tornado battered Henryville High School. Page 8
