Division 1 Best Spot News Photo/Category 15 First place Fire Eric Tretter, Ferdinand News Comments: Sparks curiosity. Good composition. Makes me think about the folks that fight fires and their training. Black and white works well. Green plants and colorful turnouts meld into strong composition. Firefighters were called to a barn fire at Francis Lindauer and Sons Farms. A 60-by-70-foot structured was in flames. Second place Mount Ayr Cheri Gayfield, The Enterprise (Kentland) Comments: Lone firefighter in dangerous situation. Good use of negative space. Compelling composition. Third place Crash Carole Brown, Springs Valley Herald Comments: Good shot emotionally and technically. Walking wounded has higher news value than just emergency personnel. Questionable crop (firefighter at top). Best General News Photo/Category 16 First place Plunge for Paul Eric Tretter, Ferdinand News Comments: Great moment captured at the peak of action. Good work by the photographer to be in front of the action even though it probably involved getting wet. The air temp hovered around 45 degrees and the water in the Ferdinand State Forest Lake was a chilly 38 degrees Feb. 19, but that didnt stop 151 friends and loved ones of Paul Fischer from jumping, running or skittering into the water. Fischer has a brain tumor. Second place Church move Eric Tretter, Spencer County Leader (Dale) Comments: Nicely composed; good tonal qualities. Welldone. Third place Dog Kyle Lewis, The Times-Post (Pendleton) Comments: Photographer did a good job of getting down low and framing this photo just right. Good effort to make a strong picture. After cutting down his piece of the net in celebration of Forest Parks Class 2A Sectional 48 championship, Joel Weyer tosses a snippet to waiting Ranger fans who swarmed the Huntingburg Memorial Gym floor. Forest Park topped Evansville Mater Dei 73-51 in the title tilt. Best Sports Feature Photo/Category 17 First place Net Eric Tretter, Ferdinand News Comments: Strong sports reaction image. Cropped well, and timing is dead on. Black and white further separates image from regular action. Second place Celebration Eric Tretter, Spencer County Leader (Dale) Comments: Very nice moment. Photog as fly on the wall. Arresting image. Technically strong. Well-done. Third place Football Tom Russo, The Times-Post (Pendleton) Comments: Aside from player on left, the composition and timing are great. Seeing players exult their coach is worth looking at again and again. Best Sports Action Photo/Category 18 First place Choke Eric Tretter, Ferdinand News Comments: Great faces make this photo with technical excellence. Second place Dive Jeff Brown, Hendricks County Flyer (Avon) Comments: Incredible timing absolutely makes this photo. Third place Kolbe Mike Deak, The Mail-Journal (Milford) Comments: This is a visually interesting action photo that rewards creative experimentation.
