Division 4 Best Feature Photo/Category 19 First place Proposal Sam Householder, The Goshen News Comments: Im really glad the photographer moved around to get this two-fer of the hug with the crowd and balloons. Its nicely arranged too. Second place Fall Don Knight, The Herald Bulletin (Anderson) Comments: This is pure eye candy that has great color and is nicely designed. Third place Frog Andrew Laker, The Republic (Columbus) Comments: This is a unique, less obvious photo where the photographers extra work paid off. Best Multiple Picture Group/Category 20 First place Judy Dave Weatherwax, The Herald (Jasper) Comments: This is a compelling, well-rounded and touching story told well. Nathan Ownbey of Danville, Ill., hugs his new fiancee, Kari Stembel of Goshen, as people release red balloons. Ownbey proposed to Stembel after having friends pass out the balloons with cards attached that said he was going to propose to his girlfriend at 7 p.m. at the corner of Washington Street and Main Street. After he got on one knee and she said yes he let go of his balloon, triggering everyone to release theirs. Second place Hogs Dave Weatherwax, The Herald (Jasper) Comments: There are some difficult and surreal images in this story with a strong narrative. Third place Farmer Alton Strupp, The Republic (Columbus) Comments: This is a compelling story that sheds light on a growing issue. Best Picture Story with Audio or Video Story/ Category 21 First place Drive-in dining Andy Knight, The Herald Bulletin (Anderson) Comments: Well-done piece on an interesting subject. Good audio and video and keeping it simple make this a good package. Second place A brain for birds Andrew Laker, The Republic (Columbus) Comments: Good video and good subject matter. The kid was a great interview for a 10 year old! Not many of those! Very nice, clean, simple piece. Third place Polar bear plunge 2012 James Tew & Chad Kline, The News-Sun (Kendallville) Comments: Good shots and clean audio. Great interviews! A very interesting subject. On a side note, we do this in Minnesota in February with three feet of ice on the lake! Now thats REALLY cold! Page 46 In an attempt to help Judy Schmetzer navigate the halls at The Waters of Huntingburg on her own, her then-caretaker Michaela Daugherty tried to teach her to find the waist-high railings along the walls. Schmetzer suffered a stroke in 2009 that caused her vision to gradually worsen.
