Best Website/Category 28 See Page 12 for all divisions. Best Community Service/Category 29 First place Food and beverage tax Craig Mauger, The Courier-Times (New Castle) Comments: This is my kind of community service journalism, when a paper digs deep to expose a problem and gets results. It is almost unheard of in this day and age to find a local unit of government basically hoarding taxpayer dollars. It was especially shocking that it happened in a community with so many needs. This was an outstanding effort on the part of the newspaper. Outstanding job! Second place Baron von Steuben monument Mike Marturello, Jennifer Decker & staff, The Herald Republican (Angola) Comments: I loved the effort to preserve local history, which is something too many papers have dropped in light of staff cutbacks and tight budgets. The way things came together to get the sculpture done was a great story in itself. This was wonderful. Third place Slaying the dragon: Fighting the growing heroin epidemic in Randolph County Amanda McFerrin, Bill Richmond & Rick Reed, The NewsGazette (Winchester) Comments: Its surprising how many people dont realize that heroin use is such a serious problem. The News-Gazette staff did an outstanding job covering the problem and the community response. Best Newspaper Design/Category 30 First place Staff, Daily Reporter (Greenfield) Comments: Compelling graphics. Your front pages really pop. Clean, concise, consistent and visually appealing. Way to go! Second place Doug Smith, The Sullivan Daily Times Comments: Bold page design, nice use of photos. Exceptional header and overall very clean. Third place Mike Marturello, Jenny Kobiela-Mondor & Staff, The Herald Republican (Angola) Comments: Nice use of color, all around good typography and design. Good use of white space grabs the eye.
