Division 4 Best Special Section/Category 26 First place 100th anniversary KPC Media Group: Writing history one day at a time Staff, The News-Sun (Kendallville) Comments: Stunning combination of fresh reporting on historic events, connecting with the people who made history in the community. Excellent design, presentation, planning and execution. Second place Who we are Staff, The Goshen News Comments: A strong second place. This annual edition connects readers to their community in a thoughtful and provoking way. The stories of the people in their community show who they are, where they have been and where they are going. Third place Salute Staff, The Republic (Columbus) Comments: It was difficult to place this third because the subject matter can make a profound impact on readers. Telling the stories of veterans allows them to feel supported in a way that some veterans who came before them have not felt. The newspapers community leadership in the effort to recognize and raise money for veterans issues is immeasurable. Best Use of Graphics/Category 27 First place Mannings career; 100 home runs; Madison County food trail Heather Bremer, The Herald Bulletin (Anderson) Comments: Good use of photo cutouts for visual appeal. This newspaper is clean and professional, but we would like to see more news information conveyed with graphics. Second place Library, mayor have downtown plans; Super Bowl Survival Guide; Less-taxing times Staff, Daily Journal (Franklin) Comments: Good use of graphics. Nice maps, but the pie charts were confusing. There needs to be a clear description of what is going on when using charts and graphics. Third place No award given. Best Website/Category 28 See Page 12 for all divisions. Best Community Service/Category 29 First place Audit: City violates law by not advertising properties Matt Troutman & Melissa Vogt, Chronicle-Tribune (Marion) Comments: Great investigative pieces. Chronicled a big city issue with unbiased, consistent coverage. This is what newspapers are here for. Way to go! Second place Brave hearts Staff, Daily Journal (Franklin) Comments: Creative page design. Moving stories captured this sensitive time with dignity and professionalism. Third place Connected by cancer Staff, The Republic (Columbus) Comments: Creative page design. Touching stories. Best Newspaper Design/Category 30 First place Staff, The Goshen News Comments: The best flag, editorial page, use of typography, use of photos, reader appeal and organization. Graphic presentation was professional and not full of gimmicks. Second place Staff, The Herald Bulletin (Anderson) Comments: This entrant oozes NEWS and importance. Professional, clean look is on par with the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. This one is for readers. Despite all of its positives, this one needs to take more design chances to pull readers into stories. Headline hierarchy not always followed. Third place Staff, The News-Sun (Kendallville) Comments: Good balance of graphic presentation and news quality. Good use of photography and headlines. Limit in the variety of headline fonts would bring more order to pages. Page 48
