Division 3 Best Spot News Photo/Category 15 First place Fire Bob Wellinski, The LaPorte Herald-Argus Comments: The photographer accomplished the difficult task of showing both action and context in a spot-news situation. The surreal color and situation added to the image. Second place Semis crash Nicole Ott, Columbia City Post & Mail Comments: This demonstrates how important it is to include people in the aftermath of a tragedy. The sense of scale is really important in this photograph. Third place LaPorte City firefighters knock down flames emerging from a home in LaPorte, Ind., April 20, 2012. No injuries were reported. Accident Bob Wellinski, The LaPorte Herald-Argus Comments: It is unusual to be able to get an engaging facial expression in news photos, but it elevated this photo above much of the competition. Best General News Photo/Category 16 First place Salute Jeff Morehead, Wabash Plain Dealer Comments: Very strong visual. Love the spent cartridges flying through the air. Maybe open faces a tiny bit, or burn them down to give overall strong silhouette. Great moment. Second place Reflect Jeff Morehead, Peru Tribune Comments: Beautifully composed image. Straightening the horizon line may have helped a bit. Striking image. Good job. Third place Hunt Jeff Morehead, The Herald-Press (Huntington) Comments: Strong moment. Very newsworthy. Two subjects could be spaced a bit better compositionally. Shell casings fly as rifle team members fire a salute during the annual Veterans Day service at the War Memorial on the Wabash County Courthouse lawn. Mitch Westlund sports a smile after winning a consolation match during the Princeton Elementary City Championship wrestling meet at Princeton High School. Best Sports Feature Photo/Category 17 First place Winner Michael Caterina, Princeton Daily Clarion Comments: Perfect expression of pride. Nice lighting. Excellent sports feature. Second place Softball Bob Wellinski, The LaPorte Herald-Argus Very well-framed. Nothing there that doesnt belong. Great emotion. Third place Bench Christopher Fryer, The News & Tribune (Jeffersonville) Comments: Great moment of humor behind the scenes. Kids are focusing on everything but the game, which is how it usually is at that age. Nice work. Best Sports Action Photo/Category 18 First place Catch Bob Wellinski, The LaPorte Herald-Argus Comments: What terrific face in such a tight photo. Great action. Second place Impact Thomas J. Russo, Daily Reporter (Greenfield) Comments: This is a great example of peak action. The fact that its during a night football game increases the level of difficulty. Third place Touchdown Andy Barrand, Journal Review (Crawfordsville) Comments: This is a great moment that would benefit from a tighter crop.
