The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, October 4, 2017 B- 3 were ready to rock and roll from the get go. It was kind of more survival out there than anything." Despite the lopsided loss, however, Mattingly was en- couraged by some of the things that he saw during the game. "It was the absolute best practice we could ask for," Mattingly said. "We've still got some things to accom- plish this year, and there's things that went on tonight that we can't simulate in practice. So it was a good chance for us, the second half, when the game had been decided, to concen- trate on going out and get- ting a good look at some things, especially on de- fense, which we have to im- prove." Mattingly was particular- ly proud of the fact that the Chargers were able to put together a couple of impres- sive offensive drives during the first half. Already trailing 14-0, Pike Central started its second offensive possession at its own 24-yard line and pushed the ball past midfield before turning it over on downs as the Titans' 22-yard line with 46.3 seconds left in the first quarter. Then, trailing 28 -0 with 8:47 left in the second peri- od, the Chargers offense re- turned to the field at the Ti- tans' 32-yard line following a 56 -yard kickoff return by sophomore Mario Fields. Eleven plays later, Pike Central scored on a one-yard run by senior quarterback Christian Alvey with 2:16 remaining in the first half to cut Gibson Southern's lead to 28 -6. "We scored on their num- ber one defense," Mattingly said. "We had two very nice offensive drives." However, that would prove to be the high water mark for the Chargers, who gained just two first downs the rest of the game while turn- ing the ball over on downs twice on their own side of the 50 -yard line, which led to two of the Titans' scores. "Some of the scores they had was because of stupid decisions on my part, put- ting us in bad field position, just trying to make some- thing happen, so I'll take the blame for three or four of those touchdowns," Mat- tingly said. "I should have punted it away, and I didn't. So that's on me." With Gibson Southern leading 42-6 at halftime, the second half was played with a running clock. "The game had been de- cided," Mattingly said. "The contest was decid- ed. We wanted to go out and play hard and we want- ed a chance to get better at some things, just like Gib- son Southern did. But when the contest has already been decided, there's no need not to run the clock." Titans senior quarterback Nic Maurer completed sev- en of 10 pass attempts for 102 yards and two touch- downs while also carrying the ball three times for 76 yards and another score. Fields and senior Clint Bo- ger both led the Chargers in rushing with 22 yards – on six and nine carries, respec- tively – while Alvey gained 20 yards on 20 rushing at- tempts. Alvey also complet- ed two of eight pass attempts for 36 yards. Pike Central will return to action on Friday, Oct. 6, when the Chargers will trav- el to Southridge. Ed Cahill photo 37-30, South Spencer 29 -22 and Gibson Southern 63-6. Gibson Southern has won all 33 meetings between the two teams dating back to 1974. "We have a wonderful opportunity to go and see our improvement as a foot- ball team from Week 7 to Round 1 of the sectionals," Chargers head coach Erik Mattingly said. "The kids feel they can play a lot bet- ter than they did on Fri- day and are grateful for the chance to go show it in three weeks." The Pike Central-Gibson Southern winner will play ei- ther Mount Vernon (Posey) or Vincennes Lincoln on Fri- day, Oct. 27. PCMS 7th & 8th grade football squads fall at Southridge The Pike Central Mid- dle School seventh and eighth grade football teams dropped losses at Southridge on Thursday, Sept. 28. In the seventh grade con- test, the host Raiders won 6 - 0 in overtime. "The seventh grade played a hard-fought game," Char- gers head coach Jeremy How- ald said. "Neither offense was able to move the ball. It was 0 -0 at the end of regulation and went to overtime. They scored on a sweep play to make it 6 -0. They went for two and was stopped. We got the ball next and were unable to move the ball." "Defensively, we're very proud of our kids," Howald added. "They played really well. Offensively, we must find a way to run the football. This group does well passing the ball when we can control the line of scrimmage; when we can't, our kids aren't ex- perienced enough to deal with the pressure. It will come with time and we will be working on it in practice." In the eighth grade con- test, the host Raiders won 18 -0. "We started the game not playing very well, as we gave up an early score," Howald said. "We played better from then on. Offensively, we were able to move the ball, but not consistently enough to be ef- ficient. Wyatt Frasure, Zane Collins, E.J. Willis and Rem- ington Gideon all ran the ball well for us." With the losses, the sev- enth grade squad fell to 2-4 while the eighth grade team slipped to 1-5. "We, as coaches, are very proud of these two teams," Howald said. "They play hard and give their all. We might not be the most talent- ed football team, we do not have the numbers that most football teams have, and we definitely do not have the size or speed of the other teams we play. But these kids do not know the word quit. With that kind of effort, they will con- tinue to get better. We are looking forward to the rest of our schedule." On Thursday, Oct. 5, the Chargers will host South Spencer for Charger Night. On Tuesday, Oct. 10, Pike Central will host Forest Park on Eighth Grade Recognition Night. The Chargers will then close out the season with back-to-back road contests, at Tecumseh on Thursday, Oct. 12, and at Tell City on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Skylar Shelton (80) prepares to take a handoff from Drew Dawson (5) for a second-half score in Pike County Youth Football 5th and 6th grade team's 19-13 win over Wood Memorial on Sunday, Oct. 1. Shel- ton scored two touchdowns on the day and Dawson connected with Arri McDonald on a 70-yard first half touchdown pass in the PC win. Submitted Photo
