B-8 Sports Wednesday, October 4, 2017 The Press-Dispatch PCMS girls' soccer team wins postseason tournament The Pike Central Mid- dle School girls' soccer team edged host Jasper on the fourth tiebreaker by the narrowest of margins – one goal – to win a sea- son-ending tournament on Saturday, Sept. 30. Pike Central tied Jasper 0 -0, defeated Gibson South- ern 1-0 and beat Tell City 4-0 – on goals by Kennedy Willis, Hannah Woodford, Wren Kabrick and Jaylynn Capehart – to finish in a first-place tie with the La- dy Wildcats. Having tied in their head-to-head match-up, the two teams remained tied after the second tie-break- er – both had no goals al- lowed. The third tiebreaker – goal differential – was the same for both teams. The fourth tiebreak- er, however, snapped the deadlock. "We had scored five goals and they had only scored four," Lady Char- gers head coach Stephanie Rawlins said. "That was the last tiebreaker before hav- ing to line up and do (pen- alty kicks). It was crazy! " Lady Chargers close regular season with 9-0 loss at Forest Park The Pike Central High School girls' soccer team closed out the regular-sea- son with a 9 -0 loss at Forest Park on Saturday, Sept. 30. Lady Rangers sophomore Emma Louden scored four goals and assisted on anoth- er while sophomores Kenlee Gehlhausen and Denai Si- card – who also had one as- sists – added two goals each. Sophomore Lauren Jahn net- ted one goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Eckert recorded four saves for Forest Park. For Pike Central, sopho- more Kelsey Barrett had 13 saves while playing the first half in goal before being re- placed by junior Bekah Luff, who recorded nine saves in the second half. Pike Central 1, Wood Memorial 1 Senior Taylor Deffendoll scored the Lady Chargers' lone goal in a 1-1 tie at Wood Memorial on Wednesday, Sept. 27. "We played strong through the entire match and were pretty even- ly matched," Pike Central head coach James DeCrane said. "I'm proud of how they played that game." Sophomore Khloye Strickland scored the La- dy Trojans' goal, off an as- sist from senior Jenna Mc- Gowan. Sophomore Kenne- dy Blacklock recorded 22 saves in goal. Heritage Hills 4, Pike Central 0 Junior Lydia Genet scored three goals and assisted on another to lead the visiting Lady Patriots to a 4-0 victo- ry on Tuesday, Sept. 26. "They are one of the best teams in our conference and we were down players, while they had twice as many subs as we did," DeCrane said. "Despite all the obstacles, the girls played strong." Pike Central (4-8 -2 over- all, 1-5 in the PAC) opened the sectional tournament at Jasper against Vincennes Lincoln on Tuesday, Oct. 3, with the winner advanc- ing to play either Princeton or Washington at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5, in a semi- final match-up.
