B-2 Sports Wednesday, October 4, 2017 The Press-Dispatch – that we'd come out on top and make history." All nine of the Char- gers' seniors – Booker, Tor- mohlen, Kyson Western, Gavin Boyd, Kaleb Claridge, Quade Claridge, Cameron Henson, Briar Meadors and Tyler Meadors – were in the starting lineup, along with junior Hayden Kabrick and sophomore Ethan Scott. Even when juniors Chris- tian Benson, Austin Holder and Jacob Vest, and sopho- more Jersey Mills came off the bench as subs, Pike Cen- tral did not miss a beat. "The people that came in and subbed in, I mean, we knew when the ball was in our box, we just had to get it out and regroup," Kyson Western said. "It's just amazing." For the game, the Char- gers took 19 shots on goal, with Forest Park sophomore goalkeeper Zach Wahl re- cording 12 saves. The game's only goal came when Booker – push- ing the ball up the sideline – centered the ball in front of the goal that Kyson Western deflected into the goal off of his upper chest. "It was just give-and-go," Kyson Western said. "Brey- ton had it down in the corner and the defender on me got lost, so I knew I was open, hoping he'd get it in, and he did. It was just a great ball and a good finish." Chad Western said that while the goal-scoring play may have not been exactly pretty, it got the job done. "I'm all about results," Chad Western said. "That's a coach's son, being about results, and being, like, 'It may not be the prettiest, but I'm going to get it in the goal, and that's what I'm about." Chad Western described Booker's cross as "a good ball." "He could have gone ei- ther way with it," Chad Western said. "He could have took it up the middle or wide. He made the unself- ish play and took it wide, and centered the ball, and it was a great ball." "I'm sure Kyson was run- ning on it, and when he saw he probably couldn't get his head on it – or he felt like he might mis-hit it – he just hap- pened to chest it and dump it right into the goal." Kyson Western laughed when asked about the goal. "I think that's the first chest goal I've had in high school," he said. "It came at a good time." Forest Park's best scor- ing opportunity came in the second half, when Tor- mohlen made a leaping grab of a ball kicked by Rangers senior Cole Oeding in front of the goal. "I knew I couldn't let that bounce over me because, with the wind and all, it could go anywhere," Tor- mohlen said. "I knew I had to go win that as soon as pos- sible. I'm glad I did, because you never know what could happen." Tormohlen shared the credit for the shutout win, the Chargers' ninth of the season, with the team's starting defensive line – Boyd and both Claridges. "They've contributed a ton, a lot, to it," Tormohlen said. "Without them, I know we wouldn't have had that conference shutout, because they had my back and I had theirs. That's what it was." Chad Western described this year's team as a "coach's dream." "They've got all the piec- es and it's just so nice to have a team that figures out their role and thrives on it," he said. "We don't win half of our games, or our con- ference, without a great de- fense. We've been great in conference. I don't know that anybody's ever had a better run of seven games in our conference, when you look at that. So that's outstanding." Even after finishing off the regular season with a shutout victory, Chad West- ern said that there was still room for improvement as the Chargers enter postsea- son play. "Everything was, like, it wasn't bad, it was just okay, or not as sharp or as crisp as good as you want it to be," he said. "It's hard to have your best every day. I mean, we've had a couple of great games this year, and I'm hoping we have a couple more still left in us." Pike Central opened sec- tional tournament play at Washington on Monday, Oct. 2, with a 4-0 victory over Vincennes Lincoln. Holder scored two goals while Henson and Kyson Western added one each. Kyson Western also had two assists. Quade Claridge, Scott and Vest dished out one assist each. Tormohlen had two saves while record- ing the shutout win. "To turn around and play Monday, that's tough, when you play on the last Satur- day, when the sectional's in your head and you've got to stay focused on this game. It's so big, to win a confer- ence for our school, which we don't get a chance to do very often." Pike Central will take on No. 11 Washington on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to the championship game on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m., against the winner of the other semifinal match between Gibson Southern and Southridge. Pike Central 2, Southridge 0 Booker and Tyler Meadors scored on goal each as the Chargers defeated visiting Southridge 2-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 26. Scott and Kyson Western had one assist apiece. "Tyler Tormohlen had an- other very strong night in goal, with a couple of very high quality saves," Chad Western said. "Our defense did a great job on their two strikers, who are really nice players. Gavin Boyd, Quade Claridge, Kaleb Claridge, Cameron Henson, Chris- tian Benson and Tyler Tor- mohlen have been playing so well, and they give us a chance to win every night. That's is such a great advan- tage, to have a defense like that. It was another nice team win for us." Pike Central 8, Wood Memorial 0 Kyson Western scored three goals, Booker and Henson added two each and Quade Claridge tallied one as the Chargers defeated visiting Wood Memorial 8 -0. "All our guys played well, and we were able to get some time for some of our younger guys and the next few guys on the bench," Chad West- ern said. "The seniors want- ed to play well the last time on their own field, and keep pressure on all night. They did their job and we got them all back in late in the game, and took them all out to- wards the end so the crowd could show their apprecia- tion for what this group has done for Pike Central soc- cer." "Another shutout for our defense was great," he add- ed. "We are so proud of the way our defense is playing right now. Great defensive play by Tyler Tormohlen, Gavin Boyd, Tyler Meadors, Quade Claridge, Kaleb Clar- idge, Christian Benson and Cameron Henson. These guys are the reason we have a chance to win each time we play an opponent." Pike Central JV 1, Evansville Reitz 0 In a junior varsity game played on Saturday, Sept. 23, Pike Central edged host Evansville Reitz 1-0. "This was a very nice team win for our JV, and against a good JV team," Chad West- ern said. "Several players played well, including Noah Whann and the rest of the defense. The JV defense has not allowed many goals this year, and that has kept us in games all year. I am very proud of our JV team, and the improvements they have made. These guys will be a big part of things to come for Pike Central soccer." VICTORY Continued from page 1 SOMETHING NEWSWORTHY?
