Stam Baptist Baptist Baptist CHURCH CHURCH Notes Notes Notes Assembly of God Continued in next column Continued in next column Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas King Solomon, with all his wealth, could not come close to the luxuries the average American family enjoys. We live in a culture that celebrates materialism and overindul- gence. We must battle the culture of greed and extravagance. It was Jesus who warned against laying up treasures on earth. All forms of commercialism constant- ly target us. The American people seldom learn when enough is enough. This plague of materialism has affected both adults and children. We should teach our children more about giving and less about getting. It makes it difficult for wise parents when their children compare everything to school and their friends. Materialism has such a strong influence that many medicate through shopping and accumulating more things. Things never fill the void that only God can fill in a person's life. Jesus never told us to seek things but to seek first the King- dom of God. God chooses to bless ma- ny people with mate- rial blessings. When much has been given then God wants us to use it to help others and evangelize the world. The Bible tells us we cannot serve both God and money. God must be first in our lives. The best way to break the hold of material things is to start giving it away. We have many opportu- nities to promote the Gospel with our mon- ey and to help meet the needs of the poor. A word of caution to Christians in particu- lar, is beware of materialism's entrapment. St. Peter was not wrong when he declared at Pentecost that the last days had begun (Acts 2:16,17). They had indeed begun, but God had a secret plan to give the world a pe- riod of grace before putting down its rebel- lion and sending Christ to reign. This secret purpose concerning "the dis- pensation of the grace of God" is the subject of Paul's epistles. However, it is interesting to see how Peter's last message explains the reason for this interruption in God's proph- esied program and the delay in Christ's re- turn to reign. First, he says in II Peter 3:8: "But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." Mark well, this is not our feeble explana- tion now as to the delay in Christ's return. This statement was made at the beginning of this time of waiting, at the dawn of the age of grace. But let us go on with Peter's declaration: "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise… but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance" ( Ver. 9). So the delay in Christ's return to judge and reign should not be counted "slack- ness" or laxness, but longsuffering. Thus the Apostle goes on to say: "And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation…" Where did Peter get this information? How did he know about "the dispensation of the grace of God"? Verse 15 explains: "Even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given unto him, hath written unto you." To Paul particularly was committed "the gospel of the grace of God" which we pro- claim today (Acts 20 :24). Peter recognized this (Gal. 2:2,7,9), and closed his second epistle with the exhortation: "But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" (II Pet. 3:18). Well it has been a good week with noth- ing much going on for once. If you are like me you are getting tired of all the talk about the respect our flag is due. It has been a tra- dition for years to stand and remove your hats when old glory is honored by our na- tional anthem. I'm like all the ones who feel what they are protesting is a subject that needs to be ad- dressed and if we don't find it in our hearts to be fair minded to all people it could get much worse. If it was their desire to get at- tention by taking a knee as a form of protest they certainly succeeded, but they would have been better off to go in front of their representatives to place their formal com- plaints to be handled in a legal fashion. To use our colors as a stepping stone to their success is just wrong. Their right to protest is fine as long as there is no disrespect in how they do it. I'm concerned that if we don't listen to one an- other we are headed for even more unrest among our own nation. All the boycotting and bad mouthing one another from both sides only divides us as a nation and a nation divided against itself will fall. Calmer heads and a little patience just might be in order. Fowler, Reporter Wednesday evening Bible study 6:30 p.m. We are grateful to all the different Pike County churches who supported the Revival at Ayrshire Val- ley. It was a huge success, because of your support and attendance. The Holy Spir- it moved and encouraged us through the Spirit and through each other. We are also grateful to Dr. Steve Dailey, who came from Indianapolis, for being obedient to God's guidance in each service. It reminded me that we as church Pas- tors and leaders need each other for encouragement in the ministry to which we are called. The people who came to be revived were and those that needed special heal- ing received it. We appre- ciated all the special mu- sic from Carol, Rev. Chalm- er and Lovetta Burden, Rev. Joe Henson, Carl Willis and a special thanks to Dr. Steve and Darleen who sang each night. Most of all, a very blessed surprise by Boots Bellamy who played a spe- cial on the piano. We were Revived.
