Klipsch, Mayor of Pe- tersburg was born and raised in Petersburg. Klipsch gradu- ated in 1969 from Petersburg High School, where he was very involved. He He enjoyed playing football and baseball throughout his years in high school, recall- ing how classmates were al- ways out playing sports and they would even shovel snow off the outdoor basketball courts to get in a game. In reminiscing about days past, Klipsch mentioned the positive influence Howard Briscoe made on him and his classmates. Briscoe coached many of the high school sports and during the sum- mer break, he would teach Klipsch and classmates how to play golf and tennis. They would even travel down to play at Oakland City's golf course because Pike County did not have one at the time. Even though Klipsch loved sports, it was not where all his time was spent. "Band was a big deal," Klipsch said. "We had way more participation in the band than sports." Jim Bolte was the band teacher and a big part of the success of the school's band according to Klipsch, who played the saxophone in the high school band and enjoyed being a part of it all. A fter graduating from Petersburg High School, Klipsch went to Indiana Uni- versity (IU) in Bloomington, where he lived on campus all four years and was a mem- ber of Sigma Chi fraternity. Klipsch also enjoyed playing a variety of intramural sports, having never missed a football or basketball game while go- ing to IU. That love of IU foot- ball and basketball only grew Klipsch into the fan he is to- day. It was the Spring of Klipsch's junior year at IU when he met his wife Karen, and said that his wife would tell you "My adult married life has revolved around the IU basketball and football games," Klipsch said with a chuckle. Klipsch mentioned that he was at IU when they hired Bob Knight, one of the most successful and innova- tive coaches in college bas- ketball. When he joined Klipsch Equipment, they had three generations under one roof: RC, Morris, and his grandfa- ther Homer Klipsch, who had started Klipsch Equipment in 1925. Klipsch Equipment was an International Harvester & Oldsmobile dealer. Over time they expanded into GM & then into Chev- rolet. They sold off the In- ternational Harvester side and changed their name to Klipsch Motors where they sold vehicles until 2008 when they closed. When asked how he got into politics, it was not in Klipsch's original plan. "I had no inten- tion whatsoever of getting in- to politics," Klipsch said. "My wife was still working, and I was looking for something to do, so I inquired about a City Code Enforcement position that Jon Craig, who was the current mayor at the time, was looking to fill. Klipsch ended up taking the position. "It was the first time I had ever been involved in city gov- ernment and I found it very interesting, " Klipsch said. Through a turn of events, Klipsch ended up being ap- pointed Petersburg Mayor and finished up the last year of Jon Craig's term as Mayor. Klipsch is now in his eighth year as Petersburg's Mayor. When asked what some- thing is people don't know about him, "Robert Charles" Klipsch laughed. "I was called R.C. from a young age and it stuck". Karen and R.C. have a daughter Emily Ryan who is married to Brock Ryan, and they have a daughter Izzy. Karen and R.C. love to watch Izzy play soccer which has be- come their favorite pastime even more than their beloved IU sports and playing golf. Golf is R.C.'s favorite hob- by and he even had a hand in helping Pride's Creek Golf Course become a reality. On top of being the Mayor of Petersburg, Klipsch is al- so heavily involved with Dis- cover Downtown Petersburg, Pike County Economic Devel- opment Corporation, along with other organizations. Klipsch added, "It has been a pleasure being the mayor of the town I grew up in and see- ing the accomplishments we have made." R.C. KLIPSCH, MAYOR OF PETERSBURG Klipsch
