College readiness workshop at Buchta Tech Center By Jill Hyneman Correspondent news@pressdispatch.net The Elmer Buchta Technol- ogy Center hosted its first Col- lege Readiness Workshop on Monday, Sept. 19. "The col- lege readiness workshop was inspired from a Chamber of Commerce Board meeting where members stressed in- terest in a fun evening for parents to socialize and learn tips to guide their future col- lege students," said Bridget Butcher, program coordina- tor at the Elmer Buchta Tech- nology Center. "I was thrilled to hear of a local need I could help support by my network of professionals," Butcher con- tinued. Guest speakers were Ow- en Thompson, Financial Aid Counselor from Vincennes University, and Cindy Gas- kins, Director of the Pike County Community Founda- tion. Gaskins spoke about the wide variety of scholarship opportunities and explained how to apply. You can find out additional information about the community foundations' scholarships at https://www. pikecountycf.org/scholar- ships. Thompson spoke about the benefit of College Go Week. He said many colleges and universities waive their appli- cation fees during College Go Week. This year's College Go Week was September 26th- 30th. He also spoke on the FASFA process. Many tips were given throughout the evening, such as choosing at least six col- leges to apply to, keeping a calendar of application/schol- arship deadlines, finding out application requirements, re- membering to proofread, and more. "It is nice to give parents another opportunity to learn about the college application process", said Stephanie Mc- Guire, parent of a Pike Central senior. McGuire also added, "Owen from VU was so help- ful and informative in so many areas. The more opportunities we parents have to gain access to information the better." Butcher added, "The feed- back received by the attend- ees and community inspire me to host similar events in the future, likely in the fall and springtime when college prep and deadlines are soon approaching."
