Hello friends, hope it is go- ing well for you and yours. our week has been on an even keel which means we have made it through and leaning toward ready for another. I tr y to do a little look see in my mind if I have done anything that could have been done differently. Usually I find something I need to make amends for be- cause as hard as we tr y we are never 100% on our Christian walk as we could have been. So do a little inventor y each week to see if you need to make those amends. Rain got that infamous wood pile wet so I couldn't burn it. As per usual I always have a job around the house to work on. Number one priority was playing with my grand- daugter because even though she is a hand full at times, she sure is a cute mess. She took a nap after dinner so I went out to the shop to work on a cou- ple of chainsaws. I'm not that good of a mechanic, but I was able to get them functioning pretty well so I was happy to see them have simple prob- lems. The wood pile was still wet the next couple of days so we brought down some things out of the attic to dis- pose them. It is amazing what things we save back because we will need it someday. My problem is I tr y to replace things before they simply bite the dust, so you have to save the old because the new item may well stop working. You have a back up or two by now. By the time you might be able to use it you can't find it now. It truly is a vicious circle. This is a for instance about what I'm talking about. From Women's Day Can- dace Cameron Bure. Verse of the month: "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it" (Psalm 110:24). What does it mean to re- joice and be glad in the day? The power of these words is in the context. Context is ever ything. Without context, it sounds as if the writer is cel- ebrating a good day. But the whole psalm tells the whole stor y. Psalm 118 begins with thanksgiving for God's love, but quickly the writer speaks of the hard things happening in his life. He describes the tough moments as a swarm of bees surrounding him. Even so, he rejoices in the day...regardless of the cir- custances. Rejoicing is about not just happiness but trust. It's easy to rejoice on the good days, but what about the not-so- good days? I remember long hard days when the kids fought, the dr yer quit, and bad things kept piling up like the laundr y. Nothing was in the fridge for dinner, the dog got loose, the electricity went out, and storms (literal storms) rolled in so the kids couldn't go outside. It felt like I, too, was surrounded by a swarm of bees. I wanted to wave a white flag and give up. Instead I read or sang this verse and remembered that I could rejoice because He was the one who had made the day—even a train- wreck kind of day. If your having that kind of day, rejoice and be glad in it. Rejoicing is about not just hap- piness, but trust. Trust in the one who made you, loves you, and gives you good things, even the days that feel not-so- good. Deb Hamm Reporter The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, September 28, 2022 D-1 God hasn't died Where were you in 1977 when the headlines screamed, "the King is dead?" Or 2009 when the next "king" died? If you are clueless, I am referring to Elvis as the king of rock and Michael Jackson the king of pop. They may be gone, but their musical influence continues (for better or worse). Inversely, a real royal has died, Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Elizabeth reigned 70 years, 214 days. Only Louis XIV of France reigned longer at 72 years 110 days. She lived a remarkable life, unlike the pop and rock kings mentioned above; free from scandal and died from old age. As a public figure, she embodied ser vice to her subjects while show- ing restraint and dignity. Her subjects are showering her memor y with love and adora- tion. Elizabeth's longevity and public conduct on the throne are remarkable. Upon hearing of her death, I was mindful of the prophet Isaiah. He wrote, "In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up (Isa 6:1). Uzziah was one of the few ex- cellent kings of Judah. Uzziah was 16 years old when he became king of Ju- dah. He reigned 52 years. He Three brutal murders Ever y student of the Word should know the three bru- tal murders around which all histor y revolves. These three murders represent Israel's re- sponse to God's three-fold call to repentance. They explain the unpardonable sin and form the background for the present dispensation of grace. It was John the Baptist, the last of the Old Testament prophets, who was sent as the forerunner of Christ to call Israel to repentance. He was beheaded by Herod, the wick- ed and licentious "king of the Jews". After John, Christ Him- self took up the cr y: "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand". Him they crucified. Then, at Pentecost, Israel was given a third opportunity to repent, until they shed blood again, stoning Stephen to death. It should be noticed, too, that their guilt, as well as their bitter enmity, increased with the second and third mur- ders! Had Israel, responded to John's call to repentance Herod would never have dared to even put John in jail. This explains why our Lord did nothing to release him from prison, even though this had offended John. It was not His, but theirs to do something about John's un- just imprisonment and ever y moment he spent in prison testified against them. Read carefully Luke 3:18-20; 7:19-29; and Matthew 14:1-11.
