Stam Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin I will never forget a cover story in Time magazine in 1966. The cover said, "God Is Dead." The article provided a lot of ser- mons, books, and discussions. It singular- ly taught that God was no longer relevant to the new generation. The flower children of the sixties and new thinkers could cre- ate their own heaven. We were now ready for a society that didn't need God. The Su- preme Court ruled prayer and Bible read- ing out of the schools. Television was com- ing of age and Playboy magazine would tell the new generation how to live. The denial of spiritual values since the sixties has produced a whole new world. Opinion polls have replaced the Ten Com- mandments in American society. Our he- roes today are often people who can run fast, jump high, and live low. Many get their inspiration from rock concerts and their re- ligion is called hiphop and progressive. The idea that God doesn't matter has de- stroyed our families. There are many in the church that no longer practice what Jesus said about sex and marriage and di- vorce. We have weak churches because we have weak families; we have weak fami- lies because we have weak marriages, we have weak marriag- es because we have weak faith in God. To save our families we must return to a system of absolute truth. The destroyers of the family must be rec- ognized. The solution which is the teaching of Jesus Christ must become a part of our daily lives. God is not dead, only our faith in God has been weakened. "Peace with God" is one thing; "the peace of God" is another. To enjoy the latter, we must first experience the former, for the peace of God, ruling in our hearts, is the result of "peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ." St. Paul declared by divine inspiration that "[Christ] was delivered for our offenc- es and was raised again for our justification" and that "therefore, being justified by faith," we, who once were at enmity with God, may enjoy "peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom. 4:25; 5:1). The result of "peace with God" is "the peace of God," the peace that He gives to His own amid all the troubles of life. This is why the Apostle wrote to the Roman Christians: "Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing" (Romans 15:13). While only those who are at peace with God can – and should know "the peace of God," it does not follow, however, that all those who are at peace with God necessar- ily enjoy "the peace of God." Believers can enjoy "the peace of God" only as they prac- tice Philippians 4:6: "Be careful [anxious] for nothing; but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God." As we follow these instructions the prom- ise which follows will certainly be fulfilled. "The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus" (verse 7). As believers in Christ "we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called ac- cording to His purpose" (Romans 8:28). Therefore weshould not be constantly over- whelmed and defeated by the adversities of life, but should heed the exhortation; "Let the peace of God rule in your hearts" (Co- lossians 3:15). "Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means" (II Thesslonians 3:16).
