Hickey FIRST NINE WEEKS What's New at Your Library by Joe Dillon Spicing up our programs like a good Thanksgiving meal The days ahead will be filled with celebrations for many of you reading this. Family dinners with lots of pie and stuffing. Oh, the stuffing! Who would have thought that baked wet bread, and a pallet of throat drying sage would make such an impact on the family din- ner table? But alas, here it is, and like it or not, you are eating the stuff, cousin "so and so" made it after all. Stuffing is great if it's done right though, and the real trick, I believe, is what it is served with. You need some gravy with that, son. We at the Pike County Pub- lic Library have been adding some metaphorical gravy to some of our programs lately, trying some new things, recipes if you will, to make successful programs that the citi- zens of the county will gobble up. Wednesday, Nov. 16, Library Preschool at the Winslow branch from 9 -10 :30 a.m. Also, the final session of Be Heart Smart, a pro- gram about healthy eating and lifestyle choices, put on in part- nership with the local Purdue Ex- tension Office, will be Wednes- day at 12:30 p.m. at the Peters- burg branch. Thursday, Nov. 17, Library Pre- school will be from 9 -10 :30 a.m. at the Petersburg branch, and from 1-2:15 p.m. at the Otwell branch. Mother Goose will be at 11 a.m. at the Petersburg branch. The li- brary program at Lakewood Nurs- ing Home will be at 10 :30 a.m. The folks at Lakewood have request- ed more stories from The Coun- ty Bumpkin Gang: A "Those Were the Days" Book, by Indiana author and newsman Wendell Trogdon. Reading the accounts of Trogdon's days growing up in Southern In- diana in the 1930s and 40s makes for a lot of "Do you 'member that? " "Yeah, I 'member," from the resi- dents. We may tell stories at these nursing home outreach programs, but the true gold comes from get- ting to hear stories from the res- idents. Listen when your elders talk, kids, many times you can learn about great things right from the source. The November meeting of the PCHS Book Club/ Library Teen Council is scheduled for lunch pe- riods on Thursday, Nov. 17 as well. The Library Teen Council half of the meeting is of great value to the library, as it is a time where the ar- ea students have an opportunity to suggest to library staff what mate- rials and services they would like to see the library offer. Friday, Nov. 18, Library Pre- school will be at the Winslow branch from 9 -10 :30 a.m. and the library outreach program at Gold- en Living is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, Creative Kids arts and crafts program will be at 3 p.m. at the Petersburg branch. The same day at Petersburg, we will also have Intro to Guitar from 6 -6:30 p.m. and Beginner Guitar from 6:30 -7 p.m. The Intro Guitar class, as the name implies, is ded- icated to the basic understanding of how to handle a guitar, i.e. parts of the guitar, tuning, changing strings, fretting notes, and prop- er fingering of basic chords. The Beginner Guitar class is directed more to the building of knowledge of chord progressions, and how to play simple songs. The class- es, like all of our programs, are free and open to the public, and you will need to bring your own guitar. The library has a couple of guitars that people can use for the class, but those often go quick- ly, so show up early if you need to use one. On that note, if any- one would like to donate a guitar for use in these classes, bring it to any branch, you have my thanks in advance. Tuesday, Nov. 22, Library Pre- school will be at the Petersburg branch from 9 -10 :30 a.m. and at the Otwell branch from 1-2:15 p.m. Basic Computer Skills will be at the Otwell branch at 1 p.m., and at the Winslow branch at 2:30 p.m. The Creative Kids arts and crafts program will be at the Win- slow branch that same afternoon at 3:30 p.m., so bring the kids by the Winslow branch after school. On Wednesday, Nov. 23, Take and Make craft packs will be avail- able at the Otwell branch, so stop in and get something to keep the kids entertained for part of the Thanksgiving break. Speaking of breaks, we get one, too. Thanksgiving day, all branch- es of the Pike County Public Li- brary will be closed to allow staff time to be with their families. Remember folks, family is what makes Thanksgiving so spe- cial. A fter all the turkey, pump- kin pie, and stuffing (with gra- vy!) is gone, and after the game is over (and the Cowboys have won, yeeeeehaaaaa!) it is family, and friends (and the Dallas Cow- boys!) for which we should all be most thankful. I hope you do have a family, and friends, to be thankful for, dear reader. I know there are many out there who do not. Remember the lonely in your prayers this Thanksgiving, and if you know someone whom you could do some good for, do what you can, if you can. I am thankful for you, dear read- er. Happy Thanksgiving and God bless. (The Colts play the Steelers at 8:30 p.m. Go Colts!)
