"I told them before the game that one of our big keys was we had to take care of the basketball, that we couldn't come in after the game and say we turned it over 25 times," Warner said. "We were probably going to lose if that happened." "The first half, I thought we did do a good job of that," Warner continued. "A lot of that was they played zone and they weren't pressur- ing us very much, but if we just set screens and popped, we were fine. But the second half, we weren't waiting on screens. We were just kind of interchanging spots, and when they're pressuring us, it's tough to get open looks." "We forced the ball han- dler to dribble a lot, and they did apply a lot of pres- sure," Warner added. "Our heads went down and we were dribbling. It's some- thing we've got to get better on. It's the first game of the year. Hopefully, from game one to game 20 we're a com- pletely different team. A lot of that's going to have to do with we've got to handle the basketball a little better." Miles led Boonville with 13 points. Miles also had seven rebounds and a team- high three assists. Blankenship, meanwhile, added 10 points while grab- bing a game-high 11 re- bounds, as the Lady Pio- neers out-rebounded Pike Central 33-25. For the game, Boonville made 16 of 48 field goal at- tempts – a 33.3 percent av- erage – and hit 11 of 18 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 20 times. Overall, Warner said that he was pleased with the sea- son-opening win. "It's just learning," War- ner said. "I know that some of these girls have played varsity basketball for two or three years, but until you're in game situations – as far as simulating varsity pres- sure – you don't really know how they're going to react. And they were nervous to- night, the first game of the year. We're expecting a big season. The girls are expect- ing a good season." "I think tonight was one of those instances where we kind of grew as a program," Warner added. "The last two years, pressure like that, we'd lose. If stuff started go- ing the wrong way, we might put our heads down and we'd end up getting beat. But to- night, we didn't. We gutted it out, we made free throws. It was super ugly the second half, but we did do the things we needed to win." In junior varsity action, junior forward Amy Young scored a game-high 11 points as Pike Central de- feated Boonville 45 -24. Freshman guard Jayln Nel- son added nine points while sophomore guards Emi- ly Carnahan and Lauren Vaughn netted eight and seven points, respectively. Sophomore guard Allesha Sisk had six points.
