Stam Baptist Baptist Baptist CHURCH CHURCH Notes Notes Notes Assembly of God Continued in next column Continued in next column Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas The greatest need in America today is a restoration of the family. Every child de- serves and needs a mother and father who live their faith, and by example teaches fam- ily values. We need parents who teach their children, that being honest is more impor- tant than being honored; and Christian faith is safer and more enduring than fame. As secularism takes a greater hold on educa- tion and the media, the Christian influence of parents must become stronger. Today, three out of every four black ba- bies and one out of every four white babies are born to unmarried mothers. It is wrong for 13-year-old inner city girls to have ba- bies without marriage, but it is even more shameful when celebrities have babies with- out marriage. The major reason for a decline in values is our educational institutions. The majori- ty of university professors are liberal, non- religious, and against strong family values and moral conduct. One recent study found that only ten percent of Americans hold a distinctly Bib- lical world view. Only about 63 percent be- lieve in an absolute God. As a Christian jour- nalist, I am greatly alarmed by the growth and acceptance of immoral lifestyles among the adult popu- lation of our nation. Christian leaders and good parents are not aggressive enough in our battle against the plague of immorality that is infecting our society. When a civili- zation becomes immoral it is only a matter of time until it is destroyed. America is in real danger because our family values are disappearing. Shortly after meeting the woman who became my wife, I knew she was the one for me. It was hard to explain, but she had captured my heart. I thought about her as soon as I woke in the morning, continual- ly during the day, and she was one of the last things I thought about before going to sleep. I consistently pursued a relationship with her allowing all other relationships to become secondary. I not only confirmed that I loved her, I also expressed to her that she satisfied and completed me like no oth- er woman could. Many of the same principles that make close human relationships work are the same in our personal relationship with the Lord, after salvation. Even though the pro- gram has changed from the Law of Moses to the principles of grace, walking with the Lord every day is essentially the same now as it was for David. In Psalm 63, he express- es many of the things that made his daily walk with the Lord such a sweet and joy- ous experience. David did not merely have a passive in- terest in the Lord. He longed for a vibrant relationship with the God of his salvation. He told the Lord, "my flesh longeth for Th- ee [as] in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is" (v. 1). Since David wrote these words "when he was in the wilderness of Judah", where water was extremely scarce, his description of being thirsty for the Lord pictured his surroundings. Just as only wa- ter can satisfy the need of one in the des- ert, David realized that only God could sat- isfy the thirst of his soul. These were not mere empty words on the part of David. He promised the Lord: "early will I seek Thee" (v. 1). David, like Abraham before him (Gen. 19:27), was in the habit of beginning the early part of his day in communion with the Lord (Psa. 5:3). Just as two people in love long to see each other, David longed "to see Thy pow- er and Thy glory, so as I have seen thee Continued on page 2 Bad week for families in Marshall County, Kentucky with the school shooting taking place. God only knows what triggers such actions from people. I just can't imagine someone being mean enough and uncaring enough to do such tragic acts without a driving force. I will not begin to build a defense for this individ- ual who carried out this school shooting be- cause bottom line is he did wrong and must pay for his crimes, but we should hear his reasons. Every day there are people who are ex- periencing trouble and having hard enough time making it through their day. One more upset could put them over the edge. Friends and people we deal with on a daily basis will usually show you if they are troubled. They may even seek your help, but when dealing with people we do not know requires us to deal with them with a respect. We do not know what their life has been like nor do we know what they are already dealing with. Having fun with others helps make our days go easier but if you find that your jest- ing is causing upset with someone, it be- comes something besides fun. Some teas- ing and kidding causes pain and embarrass- ment which there is no cause for and it puts you in the wrong. If this would happen to be their over the edge point. Bottom line is have fun, but don't be brutal and make sure they know you are kidding. I'm not a sportsman so I don't hunt and haven't fished for a long time. I do however have some firearms that were my father's. I don't use them nor do I really think I ever will but I do know these rifles would not kill anything unless I aimed them and pulled the trigger. To outlaw guns because people can't control themselves is like taking mon- ey away from a gambler to stop them from gambling. If people have it in their minds to do wrong, they will find a way no mat- ter what means we have taken to prevent their desires. To end this article I am praying for all that have lost loved ones to the violence of these past few weeks and I hope there is some peace to be found for them. Let us all be more thoughtful of one another from now on. Blessings from God to you all. RIVER OF LIFE 342 E. CR 300 N. Baxter, Jr., Pastor and Wednesday Bible study at 6:30 p.m. Remember those on our prayer list, the shut ins and our lost loved ones. Martin Luther has been credited with this quote about faith and works: "In- wardly it consists of faith towards God, outwardly in love towards our fellow- men." Inwardly, our salva- tion consists of faith alone, but outwardly, it is displayed in love toward others. An- other quote that is attribut- ed to Luther: "We are saved by faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone." The faith that saves is the one that results in action. "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone" ( James 2:17). Ken Reeder, Pastor Karri Brock, Reporter be filled constantly. This verse might be translated, "Be filled and keep on be- ing filled. A Dr. Tenny has compared this to the situ- ation of an old time farm house kitchen. In one cor- ner was a sink; above it was a pipe through which came a continuous stream of wa- ter from the spring outside. The water, by running con- stantly, kept the sink brim- ful of good water. In the same way, we are not to let ourselves be filled and then emptied of the Spir- it, like a leaky bucket, only to be refilled later on, again and again. Rather, the Holy Spirit should flow within us constantly and He will, as we yield ourselves to Christ's presence and power every day. If at any time you have no church to attend, feel free to join us for services. I'm sure you will leave feeling blessed. Jerry "Tuffy" Blackwell, Pastor Sharon Kendall, Reporter
