December's 3.3 percent jobless rate was one-tenth of a percentage point high- er than the revised 3.2 per- cent unemployment rate Pike County recorded in November. The 3.1 percent jobless rate was also the lowest re- corded in Pike County dur- ing the month of December since 2000, when it was 2.5 percent. According to estimates released by the Indiana De- partment of Workforce De- velopment, 6,189 of Pike County's labor force of 6,397 were employed during De- cember, leaving 208 persons without jobs. In December 2016, when the county's jobless rate was 4.1 percent, it was estimated that 5,875 of the county's la- bor force of 6,126 were em- ployed, leaving 251 persons without jobs. IN ADJOINING COUNTIES • Daviess County's job- less rate fell from a revised 2.8 percent in November to a preliminary 2.5 percent in December. In December 2016, Daviess County's job- less rate was 3.2 percent. • Dubois County's job- less rate fell from a revised 2.4 percent in November to a preliminary 2.2 percent in December. In December 2016, Dubois County's job- less rate was 2.8 percent. • Gibson County's job- less rate fell from a revised 2.8 percent in November to a preliminary 2.5 percent in December. In December 2016, Gibson County's job- less rate was 3.4 percent. • Knox County's job- less rate fell from a revised 3.4 percent in November to a preliminary 2.9 percent in December. In December 2016, Knox County's jobless rate was 3.9 percent. • Warrick County's job- less rate fell from a revised 3.0 percent in November to a preliminary 2.7 percent in December. In December 2016, Warrick County's job- less rate was 3.8 percent. Statewide, county non- seasonally adjusted unem- ployment rates decreased in 82 counties, increased in four counties and remained the same in six counties from November to Decem- ber. LaGrange County record- ed the state's lowest unem- ployment rate in Decem- ber at 2.0 percent. Elkhart County had the state's sec- ond-lowest jobless rate dur- ing December at 2.2 per- cent. Vermillion County record- ed the state's highest unem- ployment rate during De- cember at 4.9 percent, fol- lowed Lake County at 4.8 percent. The Elkhart-Goshen met- ropolitan statistical area had the state's lowest job- less rate among the state's 13 MSA's in December at 2.1 percent, while the Gary MSA had the state's highest MSA jobless rate in Decem- ber at 4.5 percent. The jobless rate for the Evansville MSA was 2.8 percent in December, which was down three-tenths of a percentage point from 3.1 percent in November. In De- cember 2016, the Evansville MSA's jobless rate was 3.9 percent. According to data pro- vided by the Indiana De- partment of Workforce De- velopment, the Evansville MSA – which includes Gib- son, Posey, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties – had a total of 162,800 jobs in De- cember, an increase of 3,100 jobs from December 2016. From November to De- cember, the Evansville MSA experienced significant in- creases in the manufactur- ing (+100), and health care and social assistance (+100) sectors. Those gains were offset by losses in the profession- al and business services (- 700), trade, transportation and utilities (-200), retail trade (-100), transportation, warehousing and utilities (- 100) and local government educational services (-100) sectors from November to December. Indiana's seasonally-ad- justed unemployment rate fell from a revised 3.7 per- cent in November to a pre- liminary 3.4 percent in De- cember, remaining lower than the national jobless rate of 4.1 percent. With the exception of one month when it was equal (October 2014), Indiana's unemploy- ment rate now has been be- low the U.S. rate for more than four years. The monthly unemploy- ment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people seeking employment within the prior four weeks as a percentage of the labor force. Indiana's labor force had a net decrease of 14,195 over the previous month, which was the result of 10,696 un- employed residents no lon- ger seeking employment within the last four weeks, and a 3,449 decrease in res- idents employed. Indiana's total labor force – which in- cludes both Hoosiers em- ployed and those seeking employment – stands at 3.3 million, and the state's 63.6 percent labor force partici- pation rate remains above the national rate of 62.7 per- cent. Private sector employ- ment has grown by more than 24,400 jobs over the year, and has increased by 6,000 jobs over the previ- ous month, primarily due to gains in the manufactur- ing (+4,700) and the pri- vate educational and health services (+3,500) sectors. Gains were partially offset by losses in the profession- al and business services (- 4,100) and financial activi- ties (-1,900) sectors. Total private employment stands at 2,697,700 and is 20,800 above the November 2016 peak.
