Poplar Street, Petersburg The Pike Central High School boys' ten- nis team dropped a 3-2 loss at North Posey on Wednesday, Sept. 6, be- fore bouncing back with a 5 -0 victory at Tell City on Thursday, Sept. 7. On Monday, Sept. 11, the Chargers dropped a 4- 1 loss to visiting Forest Park. Against North Posey: • At No. 1 singles, Chargers senior Jackson Keepes lost to Vikings se- nior Logan Welp 6 -3, 6 -4. • At No. 2 singles, Chargers senior Carlos Stewart lost to Vikings junior Carson Mundy 6 - 1, 6 -2. • At No. 3 singles, Chargers sophomore Dalton Williams defeated By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net A fter opening the season with wins over North Knox, Washington Catholic and Tell City, the Pike Central High School girls' soccer team dropped its next three – to Vincennes Rivet, South Spencer and Boonville – while being outscored 21-1. So you can understand why Lady Chargers head coach James DeCrane was so ecstatic after his team battled visiting Princeton to a 3-3 tie on Thursday, Sept. 7. "In my mind, we won this game," said DeCrane. "Hopefully, our drought is over. We've come back with a tie and we're going to have, hopefully, some games com- ing up that we'll have some more wins with." Pike Central (3-3-1) took a 1-0 lead when senior Taylor Deffendoll – on a through-ball by sophomore Chloe Roy – kicked the ball past Lady Tiger freshman goalkeeper Gracy Key with 32:51 left in the first half. Princeton would knot the score at 1-1 when senior To- ri Matthews – after a trip- ping call inside the 18 -yard box – fired a penalty kick be- yond the reach of Lady Char- ger sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Horrall with 16:15 re- maining in the first half. Pike Central reclaimed the lead when Roy, after having her first shot attempt on a breakaway blocked by Key, kicked the loose ball in- to the upper left side of the goal with 6:03 left in the first half. The Lady Chargers ex- tended their lead to 3-1 By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Junior quarterback Dustin Hunt ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more to lead Tell City to a 37-30 victory over host Pike Central in a high school football game on Friday, Sept. 8. The Marksmen, who improved to 2- 2 overall and 1-2 in the Pocket Athletic Conference, scored on their first pos- session – on a 9 -yard touchdown run by Hunt, who also ran for the two-point conversion – to take an 8 -0 lead with 6:58 left in the opening period. Then, after Tell City recovered a fumble by Chargers senior Clint Bo- ger on the ensuing kickoff return at Pike Central's 36 -yard line, the Marks- men punched it into the end zone – on a 3-yard run by Hunt – and senior run- ning back Joe Craig ran for the two- point conversion to extend their lead to 16 -0 with 3:28 remaining in the first quarter. "Again, not a great way to start," said Chargers head coach Erik Mattingly, whose team gave up 26 first-quarter points in a 49 -6 loss at Heritage Hills one week earlier. "The Heritage Hills game was more my decisions that put us in a hole, just trying to be overly ag- gressive against a very good team. To- night, it was just a turnover." "But I'll tell you what, (Boger) plays hard," Mattingly added. "He's a great player. Turnovers happen. You've got to find a way to come back from them. With our offense, though, we've got to limit those." Boger, however, got some revenge on Pike Central's first offensive posses- sion, which – starting at the Chargers' 30 -yard line – began with a six-yard run by Boger and ended nine plays lat- er with Boger catching a 32-yard touch- By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central High School boys' and girls' cross country teams wasted little time getting back in action fol- lowing the Labor Day week- end, hosting North Daviess, South Knox and Washington Catholic in a four-team meet on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Prides Creek Park. "Tonight was about getting back from the holiday and getting back to the grind," Pike Central head coach Josh Roach said. "We gave them the whole weekend off. We felt like with their effort and pos- itive attitudes last week, they earned the weekend off. With that being said, we kind of ex- pected a baby step back com- ing into today." Junior Draven Huff, how- ever, picked up right where By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Senior Natalie Burkhart and junior Natalie Bohnert both earned all-conference honors for the second straight year as the Pike Central High School girls' golf team placed fourth in the Pocket Athletic Conference Girls' Golf Championship at the Oakland City Golf Course on Saturday, Sept. 9. Burkhart and Bohnert tied for sixth overall – out of 44 golfers – after both fired an 18 -hole score of 14-over-par 88 on the par-74 course. They each shot a 7-over-par 44 on both the first nine holes and the second nine holes. Last year, Burkhart tied for fifth with an 18 -hole score of 93 while Bohnert finished third overall with a score of 91. The 88s shot by both Burkhart and Bohnert are the lowest 18 -hole scores posted by a Lady Char- ger in the PAC Championship since 2010, when Al- lie Henson placed first after also shooting an 88. Burkhart, whose 88 was the best-ever 18 -hole score of her high school career, also earned all-con- ference honors in 2014 and 2015. "As far as I know, Burkhart is the first person to be All-PAC all four years in golf," Pike Central head coach Jarrod Gideon said. "I am proud of both Natalies for being named All-PAC for the second straight year."
