However, the Lady Tigers would battle back, pulling to within 3-2 on a goal by junior Keona Louis with 17:31 left, and tying the score at 3-3 on a goal by freshman Clara Heldt with 10 :28 to play. Pike Central had sever- al scoring opportunities in the game's final three min- utes, including one on a cor- ner kick by Roy with 2:45 re- maining that appeared to strike a Princeton player in the hand right in front of the goal, but the handball viola- tion was not called. "At the end of the day, you're always going to have games that you're going to have bad calls," DeCrane said. "You just rise above it and keep moving on from it, and our girls took the high road. That, to me, was the win right there." The Lady Chargers would mount one final scoring threat in the match's clos- ing seconds, when Roy – with only Key between her and the goal – tried to kick the ball past Key into the up- per left corner of the net. Roy's shot, however, struck the front edge of the goal's crossbar and caromed in the air toward Deffendoll, whose header attempt sailed high over the goal and out of bounds with 20 seconds left. DeCrane described the game-ending play as a "heartbreaker." "But, look at how many shots we had at the end," DeCrane said. "They picked themselves up again and they went right back at it again. To me, I couldn't be prouder. It's hard to be up- set by that, because they got right back up, they got an- other shot at the goal." DeCrane said he was pleased with the way his team kept the pressure on Key, who had nine saves. "I think that we're turning a leaf and, hopefully, we're just going to turn it around from the other games," De- Crane said. "I think this is a positive trend and I think we'll do well for the remain- ing part of the season." "It was just a fun soccer game to watch," DeCrane added. "In my mind, we won this one." Pike Central, which played at South Knox on Tuesday, Sept. 12, will trav- el to Northeast Dubois on Monday, Sept. 18, before re- turning home to host North Posey on Tuesday, Sept. 19, and Gibson Southern on Thursday, Sept. 21. "Against North Posey, we played two of the best halves we have played all year," said Chargers head coach Chad Western. "North Posey is a great defensive team that does not allow many goals at all." "The second half, we still played well and had a lot of chances, while limiting North Posey on offense," Chad West- ern added. "I thought all 14 of our players played well, and it was a great team win." Junior Austin Holder had one assist in the win as the Chargers improved to 8 -1-1, including 3-0 in the Pocket Athletic Conference. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, Kyson Western and sopho- more Ethan Scott scored two goals each while senior Bri- ar Meadors added another to lead Pike Central to a 5 -0 vic- tory over visiting South Knox. "We must continue to try things and im- prove to be the team we want to be, as we are not there yet." The junior varsity, mean- while, battled the visiting Spartans to a 0 -0 tie. "The team played well and just couldn't finish a goal to get the win," Chad Western said. "Several of the jayvee players played well, including our defense of (sophomore) Jersey Mills, ( junior) Austin Dixon, (sophomore) Andrew Clark, ( junior) Jaden Mont- gomery and (sophomore) Coleman Henson."
