Men al- so get breast cancer. When breast cancer is caught early, there is a 99 percent survival rate after five years. In 2016, it is estimated that 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed and 40,450 people will die from breast cancer. Cancer cells can grow out of control before any symptoms of breast cancer appear. That is why breast cancer screen- ing is important. Screening tests are used to find breast cancer before it causes signs or symptoms. Screening tests can find breast cancer early, when the chances of surviv- al are highest. If you have a history of breast cancer in your family, talk with a doc- tor about your risk, when to start getting mammograms (or other tests) and how of- ten to have them. In order to detect breast cancer, every- one should know what is nor- mal for their breasts. If there is any change, see a doctor. To learn more, go to www. tri-cap.net or call 812-482- 2233. Lend a helping hand to local nursing home residents For several months now, Golden Living Center and Amber Manor Care Center have been posting needed items for their clients on a dedicated poster board at the checkout in Casey's convenient store locat- ed across from German American Bank in Peters- burg. Both nursing homes post first names and the items needed by those individu- als at their respective care facilities. Needed items in- clude pajamas, house slip- pers, gift and restaurant cards, electric razors and the like, according to store manager Ladanna Dick. The ongoing effort has been successful in con- necting those in need with individuals who are com- munity-minded and have the time and finances to supply the basic needs for some of the less fortunate residents of the city. The request board is available 24/7 and donated items can be dropped off at any time. Marcia Hill received the William H. Slaven Sr., Friend of the Handicapped award.
