HONORS Continued from page 1 phy of South Spencer, who shot and 81; Vicki Nelson of Heritage Hills, who also shot an 81; Baileigh Schnei- der of Southridge, who shot an 82; Abbey Denham of South Spencer, who shot an 84; Claire Jones of Gibson Southern, who shot an 85; and Haleigh Exline of North Posey and Allie Sensmeier of Gibson Southern, who both shot a 91. Murphy won a one-hole sudden-death playoff with Nelson to claim the PAC's medalist honors. Pike Central senior Mor- gan DeWeese shot a 31-over- par 105; senior Jalah Barnes shot a 37-over-par 111; and senior Mackinzie DeWeese fired a 39 -over-par 113. As a team, Pike Central finished with a score of 392, 25 strokes behind Gibson Southern's first-place score of 367. South Spencer placed second with a score of 382 while Southridge placed fourth with a score of 390. "Obviously, we were dis- appointed with how we played," Gideon said. "We were about 25 strokes worse on the back nine than we have been in any nine holes the last few weeks." Gideon noted that, follow- ing the first nine holes, the Lady Chargers top four golf- ers had a combined score of 190, just four strokes behind Gibson Southern's 186 on the front nine. On the back nine, howev- er, Pike Central's top four golfers combined for a score of 200 while Gibson South- ern posted a 181. "I'm not sure if we got tired or just started to feel the pressure," said Gideon, whose squad placed second in the PAC Championship last year, 17 strokes behind Gibson Southern. "Some- times in golf it just isn't your day." "It's like I told the girls be- fore the round started, they are a great group of kids, and whether they won or lost, it doesn't change how I feel about them as people," Gideon added. "They are all fine young ladies. I know the seniors wanted to play better in their final PAC meet, but it doesn't always go the way you want in golf and in life. We will regroup and gear up for sectional this Saturday, and forget about last week." Pike Central will travel to the Country Club of Old Vin- cennes on Saturday, Sept. 16, to compete in the sec- tional tournament. The top three teams, as well as the top three individuals from non-advancing teams, will advance to the regional tour- nament, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Country Oaks Golf Course in Montgomery. The sectional meet is scheduled to start at 10 :30 a.m., Eastern time. Pike Central High School junior Natalie Bohnert (left) and senior Natalie Burkhart (right) both shot an 18-hole score of 88 to earn all-con- ference honors during the Pocket Athletic Confer- ence Girls' Golf Championship on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Oakland City Golf Course. Burkhart be- came the first Lady Charger golfer to earn All-PAC honors four times. Bohnert also earned All-PAC honors as a sophomore. Ed Cahill photo Bohnert shoots par to break PCHS girls' golf record Junior Natalie Bohnert fired a school-record score of 36 as the Pike Central High School girls' golf team cruised to a 48 -stroke victory in a tri-match held on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Prides Creek Golf Course. Bohnert's even-par score bested the previous nine- hole school record of 39 that senior teammate Na- talie Burkhart set as a ju- nior at the Country Oaks Golf Course in Montgom- ery, which Bohnert had matched twice this season – on Aug. 17 at Country Oaks and on Aug. 31 at the Christ- mas Lake Golf Course in Santa Claus. "Natalie Bohnert played about as perfect a round of golf as you can play," Lady Chargers head coach Jarrod Gideon said. "She hit every fairway, and hit every green in regulation, which is un- heard of even on the college or professional level." "She played well enough that if a few putts drop she could have easily been three or four under par," Gideon added. "It was an outstand- ing round." Bohnert's record-break- ing round was part of a re- cord-breaking team effort as Pike Central shot a team score of 167 to eclipse the previous school record of 170 – set last year against South Spencer – by three strokes. "I couldn't have been more proud of our entire team," Gideon said. "We re- ally played well from top to bottom. All six girls were under 50 for the first time this year." Burkhart shot a 4-over- par 40, matching her best nine-hole score of the sea- son. "She is starting to find her swing at the perfect time," Gideon said. Senior Mackinzie De- Weese, meanwhile, record- ed an eagle on Hole No. 9 – a par-5 – while firing her personal best score with a 9 -over-par 45. "That may be the first eagle in a match by a Pike Central girls' golfer," Gide- on said. In addition, senior Jalah Barnes shot a 10 -over-par 46, besting her previous personal best score of 48; DeWeese's twin sister, Mor- gan, tied her personal best score with a 13-over-par 49; and sophomore Hadley Holder shot a 13-over-par 49, besting her previous per- sonal best score of 52. Princeton placed second as a team with a team score of 215 while South Knox was third with a team score of 230. "It was the kind of night my assistant coach, Fran Lewis, and I have been wait- ing for all year, with every- one playing well together at the same time," said Gide- on, whose team improved to 15 -2 in nine-hole match- es. "We knew they were capable, and we hope we are peaking at the perfect time! " "A special thanks to Fran," Gideon added. "She is an absolute blessing to have as an assistant. She volunteers a lot of time be- cause she wants these girls to succeed. She's a great as- set to our team." Pike Central 184, South Spencer 208 Senior Natalie Burkhart shot a team-best 5 -over- par 41 while junior Natalie Bohnert fired a 7-over-par 43 to lead the Lady Char- gers to a 184-208 victory over visiting South Spen- cer on Thursday, Sept. 7, at Prides Creek. In addition, senior Mack- enzie DeWeese had an 11-over-par 47, senior Jalah Barnes had a 17-over-par 53, senior Morgan DeWeese had a 19 -over-par 55, and sophomore Hadley Holder had a 20 -over-par 56. "As expected, we had a slight mental hiccup after our great round Tuesday," Pike Central head coach Jarrod Gideon said. "I don't think we were quite as fo- cused as we were Tuesday." With the win, the La- dy Chargers – who closed out the regular season by participating in the Pocket Athletic Conference Cham- pionship at the Oakland City Golf Course on Satur- day, Sept. 9 – improved to a regular-season-best record of 16 -2 in nine-hole meets. During the regular season last year, Pike Central went 13-4 in nine-hole meets. On Saturday, Sept. 16, the Lady Chargers will compete in the sectional tournament at the Country Club of Old Vincennes.
