Eric Gogel photo Pike County Economic Development Why it is good to be involved in a pro-growth community By Ashley Willis The Pike County EDC has made it the mis- sion of the organization to be a pro-business commu- nity and enthusiastical- ly embrace growth. This week, I wanted to share my view on why it is good to live and/or work in a com- munity that is pro-busi- ness and wants econom- ic growth, and invite you to be in the conversation. Why is it good to live in a community that wel- comes new business and a growing community? It is good because the world is constantly evolving. Take technology for example, new technology is advertised every day, mo- bile phones transformed into smart phones, and now they are developing smart, driver- less vehicles—WOW! My perspective is Pike County has to be similar to the technology evolution: strong but also flexible. We must grow in various directions in which we our- selves are unfamiliar. The young entrepreneurs whom I have spoken with are creating/inventing new con- cepts that are unheard of, this is one way that makes Pike County stand out in a crowd, as we are entrepreneurship driven. Why is it important for you to be involved and part of the conversation? So you can learn of what exciting initiatives we are putting into play, and also so you can be part of the dis- cussion and share your ideas. I know of several committees around Petersburg, Winslow, Spurgeon and Otwell that would encourage more people to come to the table and partic- ipate in the conversation. Pike County turned 200 years old last year, and the City of Petersburg is turning 200 this year. Think about what the county has accomplished to date and now think about our generations legacy and what the next 200 years could look like. I challenge you to get involved and help your communities thrive, a little bit goes a long way and you could be just the person to help your community/town/organization. For more information, follow us on Face- book at Pike County Economic Development Corporation or contact Ashley P. Willis at pikegrowth@pikeco.org or 812-354-2271. 'Crocheting for a Cause' at the Oakland City Library slated for Sept. 23 The Oakland City Public Library is host- ing "Crocheting for a Cause" on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 9 a.m. Terri Frantz will teach how to crochet plastic bags to make sleep- ing mats for the homeless. These mats are durable and unlike cardboard, water resis- tant. The library has a limited supply of size P and Q crochet hooks for use during the program, however participants are wel- comed to bring their own hooks. Registra- tion is limited for those needing to borrow hooks. If you already know how to make the mats, you are welcome to come and help others learn or just come and craft. To reg- ister, call the library at 812-749 -3559.
