Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin Minutes with the Bible by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam Baptist Baptist Baptist CHURCH CHURCH Notes Notes Notes Assembly of God Continued in next column Continued in next column Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas There are many aspects of prayer and the human urge and need to pray. Not all pas- tors preach and teach enough about prayer. The interesting thing is that the church talks less about prayer and secular media often write more about prayer. I do not remember a day in my life when I did not pray. The wonderful truth is ma- ny of my prayers have been supernatural- ly answered. There are times in every life when the undeniable urge comes for us to call on God. Sometime ago the Roper Poll found that over half of all Americans pray every day. Prayer has been called the na- tive language of the soul. It is the universal expression of an innate human desiring to make contact with the Divine. Since the Iraqi war and continuing con- flicts, I have been amazed at the many sto- ries I have heard of our troops turning to God in prayer. They pray on desert fields, in tanks, and as they bind the bleeding wounds of a fallen soldier. Our President talks freely about his daily prayer time and often asks people he meets for the first time to pray for him. Prayer may have been banned from our schools but all over America I see people pray. I see working men come to the diner for lunch and bow their heads to pray. I visited a sick friend in the hospital and was at the door as the pastor prayed for the healing of the sick. The surgeon is ready to do his work and says to the patient, "I always pray before I begin the surgery." The little child says a prayer by her bedside. A mother, with tear filled eyes, prays for a wayward daughter. The power of prayer is timeless and avail- able to all who call on the name of our God. We ran across an article recently, enti- tled: "Yes, the Bible is a Confusing Book." The article did not even attempt to dispel this "confusion," or in any way help its read- ers to understand the Bible. It did not sug- gest even one basic rule of interpretation. Nor did it explain why the Lord Jesus Christ and the apostles constantly exhorted men to study the Bible. The Bible is indeed a very large Book, so that the greatest of us will never un- derstand it all. Moreover, it is God's Book and must necessarily contain much that is "hard to understand." But this makes it the greater challenge to the believing heart to seek divine aid in exploring its depths and the greater joy when precious stones are brought up from this exhaustless mine. God does not reward lazy and indiffer- ent Christians with light from His Word, but confusion invariably vanishes as we prayer- fully obey His command: "Study to show thyself approved un- to God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (II Tim. 2:15). In studying the Bible there are basic dis- tinctions to be observed; e.g., between the twelve apostles and Paul, the apostle for this age; between the "gospel of the kingdom" and the gospel for our day: the "gospel of the grace of God," etc., but meantime there are many passages of Scripture so plain and simple that a child can understand them and no theologian can explain them away. For example, in John 3:35,36, we read: "The Father loveth the Son, and hath giv- en all things into his hand. "He that believeth on the Son hath ever- lasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him." At the other end from the spiritual pov- erty experienced by those who deem the Bible "a confusing Book," we have what St. Paul, by divine inspiration, calls "all [the] riches of the full assurance of understand- ing" (Col. 2:2). We've been starting out several ram- blings now by comparing one week to an- other and how the weeks have affected us. Well finally we had a week that didn't go quite so bad nor did it present any new prob- lems. At church we have been trying to set aside a time of sharing what we have learned new during the past week. It would surprise you when you hear how others have accomplished things that seem to cause others to struggle and how much we can learn each day no matter how old or how young we are. The sharing of your new-found knowledge is doing what God wants us to do and that is help one another through this life. This past Saturday I officiated a wedding and as the vows and promises were being said the people in the congregation were al- so given a charge to help this couple make their commitment to one another a success. If we committed ourselves to helping our young families have successful marriages we would be there for them with sage ad- vice and patient love. Most of the time we want to judge them or micro-manage their lives instead of being there when they need us the most. If you have been married for any length of time the first paragraph says a lot to you and you can be the person with the good advice. So did you learn anything last week? Could it help someone else get through eas- ier? Do you think it is worth sharing? Are you willing to share what you have learned? These are good questions and if the right at- titude is applied to each of them our world would be easier for us all. Well blessings from God to you all. Learn what you can and don't forget to share the knowledge. Continued on page 2 e greatest week of summer! If you are looking for a family-oriented church that preaches and teaches from the Word of God, that chooses to be more Bibli- cally correct than politi- cally correct, that believes ALL lives matter and trusts in the saving cleansing power of the shed blood of Christ, you will fit right in. Dr. C. Baxter, Jr., Pastor We want to satisfy that deep need within. We look and look, never to find it. The only way to find fulfillment is in our Lord and Savior, Je- sus Christ. In Him alone will we sat- isfy that deep longing and fulfill our lives with His love and peace. We invite you to come and worship with us.
