Poplar Street, Petersburg Pike Central High School senior Sydney Brooks has been awarded Academic All-State honors for softball by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports As- sociation. In order to be nominated for ICGSA Academic All State honors, an athlete must be a senior who participated in at least 50 percent of the varsity con- tests in an IHSA A-sponsored girls' sports program; have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale; and a minimum SAT score of 1110 on the critical reading (verbal) and math sec- tions, or a minimum ACT composite score of 24. The nominating coach must be a current mem- ber of the ICGSA and the nomination must be signed by both the coach and the school principal, and a transcript must be provided by the school's guidance counselor verifying the athlete's SAT/ ACT scores, class rank and cumulative GPA. Brooks, who started all 21 games in left field this past season, batted .290 – with 20 hits, including six doubles, in 69 at-bats – while scoring 15 runs and driving in 11. She also walked six times and struck out six times and had three sacrifice hits. In eight games against Pocket Athletic Confer- ence opponents, Brooks had nine hits, including one double, in 25 at-bats – a .360 average – while scoring five runs and driving in four. She walked twice, struck out three times and had two sacri- fice hits. Morton, who graduated from Pike Central High School in 2014, batted .385 while leading the Lady Oaks with 10 home runs and 46 runs batted in. "The 10 home runs and 46 RBIs are the second-highest ever here at Oak- land City University," head coach Pat- ty Buchta said. Morton collected 50 hits, including 13 doubles, and scored 26 runs for the Lady Oaks, who ended their season 20 - 22 with a 4-0 loss to Cincinnati Chris- tian University in the finals of the NC- CA A Mid-West Regionals. "She's a hard worker," Buchta said. "She demands excellence. She's a team player. I couldn't ask for a better leader." "I'm very happy for her," Buchta add- ed. "She's very deserving. We didn't have an outstanding year, but we did last year, and her stats speak for them- selves. She had a really, really nice year." Morton, along with teammates Kay- ley Main and Whitney Jeffers, was also recently named a NCCA A Scholar-Ath- lete, which requires a grade point aver- age of 3.4 (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher. During her high school career, Mor- ton received Pocket Athletic Confer- ence honorable mention accolades as a catcher in 2013 and was named to the PAC's All-Conference Team as a utility player in 2014. Vaughn, Onyett compete in boys' golf regional tournament By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central High School junior Lincoln Vaughn shot an 18 -hole score of 90 and sophomore Noah Onyett fired a 91 while competing as individuals in the IHSA A Boys' Golf Regional Tourna- ment on Thursday, June 8, at the Country Oaks Golf Club in Montgomery. Vaughn began his round with a bogey on Hole No. 10, a double bogey on Hole No. 11 and a quadruple bo- gey on Hole No. 12 enroute to a 13-over-par 49 on the back nine. A fter collecting bogeys on Hole No. 1 and Hole No. 2, Vaughn parred five of the next six holes while shoot- ing a five-over-par 41 on the front nine to finish the day with an 18 -over-par 90. Onyett, meanwhile, be- gan his round with a dou- ble bogey on Hole No. 10 and a bogey on Hole No. 11 before shooting a birdie on the par-five Hole No. 12. Onyett would then make par on Hole No. 15 and Hole No. 18, bogey Hole No. 13, No. 14 and No. 17 and double bo- gey Hole No. 16 to compile a seven-over-par 43 on the back nine. Starting the front nine with a triple bogey on Hole No. 1, Onyett parred Hole No. 2 and birdied Hole No. 3 before taking a double bo- gey on Hole No. 4 to fall to 11-over-par. However, after making par on Hole No. 5, Onyett was eight-over-par on the next four holes, with a bo- gey on Hole No. 6, a double bogey on Hole No. 7, a triple bogey on Hole No. 8, and a double bogey on Hole No. 18. Vaughn's 90 and Onyett's 91 were the lowest scores by a Charger since 2012, when Brad Douglas fired an 80. Kaleb Hill advanced to the regional tournament as an individual in 2014 and shot a 94.
