Poplar Street, Petersburg Deadline: 5 p.m. on Monday SHERL STEVEN KINDER III Sherl Steven "Steve" Kinder III, 74, of Gold Can- yon, Ariz., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Mon- day May 15, 2017. Steve was born to Sherl C. and Lucille Kinder and grew up in Winslow, where he went on to be captain of his high school basketball team. He spent four years in the United States Air Force, where he proudly served his country in Vietnam. A fter his tour, he moved to the Orlando, Fla., area, where he worked for Ben- dix at Kennedy Space Cen- ter, and continued his edu- cation and received a bach- elor's degree from Universi- ty of Central Florida. In 1973, he assumed the position of Director of Per- sonnel at Sea World of Flor- ida, where he stayed until 1985. A fter which he worked as a consultant in HR out placement, as well as taught for UCF. In 1996, he and his wife Peggy moved to Arizona, settling in Gold Canyon. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Peggy; three children, Steven (Sharla) Kinder, of Cocoa, Fla., Rob- bie (Heather) Milstead, of Alpharetta, Ga., and Shelle (Garrett) Beane, of Gilbert, Ariz.; and six grandchil- dren, Morgan, Sean, Kalen, Madison, Landon and Rylan. There will be a family-on- ly service at the Arizona National Cemetery, where he will receive full military honors on June 26, 2017. A public "Celebration of Life" service will be June 27, 2017, at 1 p.m. at the Gold Canyon Methodist Church with a reception to follow. As per his request, in lieu of flowers, make donations to the Vietnam Vets in your area. JERRY HORTON Jerry D. Horton, 80, of Ar- genta, died Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at Decatur Memo- rial Hospital. He was born June 28, 1936, in Jackson, Miss., the son of Leon and Ollie Hor- ton. He married Jenita Wil- lis (Shorty) on January 26, 1968, in Petersburg. He was the owner of a construction company and a member of Oakley Brick Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a sportsman. He is survived by his wife, Jenita, of Argenta; a daugh- ter, Jelena Ekiss, of Cerro Gordo; grandchildren, Ja- cob Massey, Jaelyn Guinn and Tyler Horton; mother- in-law, Mary Willis, of Pe- tersburg; brothers-in-law, Roger Willis and Tim Wil- lis, both of Petersburg; sis- ter-in-law, Juanita Richard- son, of Petersburg; and ma- ny nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jerry Lee Horton; a sister, Fran- cis Thorne; and brother-in- laws, Larry McGee and Ray- mond Richardson. Funeral services were at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 3 at Brintlinger and Earl Funer- al Home in Decatur, Ill., with burial in Walnut Hills Ceme- tery in Petersburg. MADISON JANE DUR AND Madison Jane Durand, 18, of Naperville, Ill., and for- merly of Colorado and Knox- ville, Tenn., passed away af- ter a long illness on June 7, 2017. Born March 5, 1999, in Naperville, she died peace- fully in the hospital with her family in attendance. Madison is survived by her mother, Brianna (Brashears) Wuest; her father, George Cameron Wuest; a brother, Camer- on Wuest; grandparents, Chuck and Treva Brashears, of Naperville, Ill.; an aunt, Brittan (Brent) Fatig, of Aurora, Ill.; uncle, Bran- don (Tiffany) Brashears, of Montgomery, Ill.; and sever- al cousins. Madi attended high schools in Colorado, Ten- nessee and was recently enrolled at Metea Valley. She loved to count popsi- cle sticks and rocks, collect hats, purses and dolls, and visit with people. Through- out her 16 -year struggle with complications from brain cancer, she remained happy, loving and always greeted everyone with "How are you today? " She also en- joyed participating in the Special Olympics. Arrangements for crema- tion were entrusted to Frie- drich-Jones Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Naperville, Ill. A celebra- tion of Madi's life will be at a future date for family and friends. GEORGIA ANN MARVELL Georgia Ann Marvell, 79, of Mackey, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2017, at the home of her daughter, with whom she had been staying, in Velpen. She was born Aug. 23, 1937, in Giro, Ind., to Carl and Eunice (Robinson) Mar- vel. She married her hus- band, Vesper Frank Marvell, on March 20, 1954, at the Pa- toka Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband on June 2, 1997; her parents; one broth- er; and three sisters. She is survived by daugh- ters, Paula (Larry) White- head, of Patoka, Sher- ri (Mark) Bedwell, of Ft. Branch, and Angela (Steve) Denu, of Velpen; son, Mike (Lynn) Marvell, of Somer- ville; sister Mary Jo (Ron) Ruppel, of Stendal; broth- er, Bill (Cheryl) Marvel, of Monroe City; seven grand- children and 10 great grand- children. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, June 5, 2017, at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton, with Pastor Jeff Pinney officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cem- etery in Patoka. Visitation was from 11 a.m. until ser- vice time on Monday at the funeral home. IVA JEWEL ELKINS Iva Jewel (Anderson) El- kins, 90, of Hammond, for- merly of Petersburg, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017, at home. She was preceded in death by her husbands Del- mar Dorsey, Fredrick A. Packard and Theodore L. Elkins; and a son, Steven F. Packard. Surviving are children Paul D. Dorsey, Robert Wil- liam ( Wilma) Dorsey and Carmen (Thomas) Athens; four grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and nieces and nephews. Graveside services were at noon Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at Anderson Chapel in Petersburg. Harris Funer- al Home was entrusted with her care. EARL R AY PHILLIPS Earl Ray Phillips, 75, formerly of Oakland City, grasped the hand of Jesus on June 10, 2017. He loved basketball and played throughout high school and beyond. He worked for Wilson meat- packing in Logansport. Surviving are his wife, Monaie; two daughters, Angela (Rick) Leathco, of Winslow, and Kathie ( Jes- se) Wonder, of Washington; a son, Dustin (Leanne), of Greencastle; a brother, Mel Phillips; a sister, Shirley Hatfield; seven grandchil- dren; and seven great-grand- children. Preceding him in death were his parents, Cleo and Ethel (Lytle) Phillips; two brothers, Kirby and Wayne; and a son, Stephen Earl. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 24, 2017, at Neeham, Sto- rey, Wampner North Chap- el in Marion, Ind. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until ser- vice time. DELORES L. DUNN Delores L. Dunn, 87, of Pe- tersburg, died at 10 :29 p.m. June 8, 2017, at St. Charles Health Campus in Jasper. She was born May 12, 1930, in Pike County, to Dor- man and Leona ( Willis) Nel- son. She was a retired seam- stress for Gossards. Preceding her in death were her husband, Ansel Lee Dunn; brothers, Wayne and Carl Nelson; and a grandchild, Tim Dunn. Surviving are her son, David (Beverly) Dunn, of Petersburg; two grand- children; five great-grand- children; and three great-great-grandchildren. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 12, 2017, at Harris Funeral Home, with Rev. Roy Stilwell officiating. Burial followed in New Lib- erty Cemetery in Velpen.
