Petersburg's Boy Scout Troop 151 attend- ed summer camp last week at the Old Ben Scout Reservation with troops from south- west Indiana and Southeast Illinois. Sev- en local Scouts attended the camp that ran from Sunday through Thursday. Scout Leader Chuck Froehle said they had a great week for camp with the cool dry weather last week. He said the Petersburg troop won numer- ous camp-wide competitions. "Our boys are getting older and are able to compete better now. In past years, we often had some of the younger kids in the competitions." They placed first in The Great Race, the Buffalo Hunt (participants searched the camp for leaders in a Buffalo shirt and took their picture) and the Which Way contest (about navigation and knowing directions). They placed second in the biggest toad com- petition, by finding the second biggest toad during the week. Troop 151 also participated in several ex- tra projects, such as leading the morning Flag Ceremony, cleaning the shower house one day and completing a public service project of clearing vegetation away from the Quartermaster quarters. Along with all the fun competitions, the Scouts also achieved numerous Merit Badg- es during the week. Cameron Smith, Ben Hess and Michael Smith earned Rowing, Motor Boating and Communication merit badges. Sam Haycraft earned Emergency Prep, Environmental Science and Swimming; Jar- ed Coomes completed Kayaking; Dominic Garland completed Kayaking, Rowing and Rifle; while Bryce Garland completed Kay- aking and Lifesaving. Petersburg Boy Scouts attended summer camp last week Jared Coomes puts a string handle on a can to be used for cooking on the tri-pod his fellow Scout Dominic Garland built. Brian Haycraft, Ben Hess and Dominic Garland hold various parts of a gateway to their campground in place to be lashed together with string. Each Scout troop at Old Ben Scout Reservation last week built gateways to their camps as part of a camp-wide contest. Michael Smith uses an old door to climb up high enough to tie off a main support beam of the group's gateway to their camp. Laura Smith served as the camp's nurse for the week.
