I especially do this when I’m hunting in another state. I’ve been lost a few times. When I’m walking in, I always try to turn around and look back to see what the view looks like going in the opposite direction. I also mark certain top- ographical differences such as a fallen tree or one that has a certain shape or char- acteristic. I also take with me some mark- ing ribbon just in case I have to wander through the woods in search for an animal I may have shot. I will mark my path back to my treestand. Again, I’ve just hunted long enough to understand that no matter how experienced I may think I am, I can and will get turned around in a strange place. One of the simplest inventions that came along a few years ago was refl ec- tive tacks. They are pushed into a tree and when passed over with a fl ashlight, will make a path look like an airport runway. I’ve hunted in some places where these tacks were put on both sides of the path every few feet, all the way to the foot of the tree where I was to hunt. Because some- one marked my path, there was no way I was getting lost. When I think about the most important things in my life, I am equally thankful that some folks marked a clear path to keep me from getting lost. And even though I chose FOR SALE FOR SALE COMPOUND BOW WITH hard case. In good cond. 55 lb pull. $140. 704-481-0775. QUEEN MATTRESS/BOX SPRING, $145. 32” computer monitor, $45. Wisdom is knowing when to blaze your own trail and when to understand that the trail that others have blazed, is the only way to go. It is also making sure that you have marked the correct trail for those who will come after you. There are some areas in life that those who follow us must fi nd out for themselves; things like what their call is, or what their passions are. There is no shortcut for these pursuits. In other areas we can save them a lot of heartaches if we will clearly mark the path and warn them concerning leaving its narrow way. Even though I had some great guides in my life, I also know that if others had also accepted their re- sponsibility for pointing me the right way, I could have learned a lot of important les- sons a lot earlier than I did. Don’t ever be afraid to mark the path when you are sure of exactly where it leads. KOSA The retirees from Kosa fished Lake Norman last week. Ken Johnson and Fred Wrigh Johnson and Fred Wright picked up the win with 9.05. James Osborne and Ray Hembree were second with 7.05. Osbrone and Hembree had big fish of the day with a 3.60 largemouth. JR Garland fished solo and took third with 5.35. This week, the retirees fish Lake Wylie. MOSS Brian and Cody Hoyle took the win at the weekly Thursday night bass tournament on Moss Lake last week. The father and son duo had 9.73. Brent Shytle and Brad Carpenter had 6.46 and were second. Reggie and Johnny Guffy were close behind in third with 6.04. Matt Arey and Chet Beam had 5.60 and landed in fourth and rounding out the top five was Randy and Randall Wright with 5.02. Arnold says the fish-off for the weekly events will be on Saturday October 16 from 8am til 2pm. CCBC The Cleveland County Bass Club fished Fishing Creek last week, Chuck Camp brought in 9.74 and grabbed the win. Tyler Hensley had 6.66 (and may be doomed for the rest of the year with that number) and was second. Roger Beaver had 6.04 and was third followed by Tom Mayhew with 5.52. Fifth went to Ronnie Humphries with 2.96. Mayhew had the big bass of the day with a 3.06 largemouth. The CCBC will fish Lake Wylie in October. Bass Caster The Bass Casters will fish their fish off this coming weekend. The lake will be determined by draw the morning of the event. October Special 18 Holes Includes Cart HUNTING TIPS G TIPS Try wearing a pair of amber shooting glasses when hunting on dull days. The glasses will aid in spotting movement, from cottontails to whitetails, by increasing contrast and brightening the woods. Old socks are great for slipping over the stocks of your guns. They will prevent scratches during storage, when in gun racks, or when traveling. Remember that farmland whitetails and mule deer quickly become accustomed to the smell of cow poop. Although not very appealing, step in one on your way to the stand and it will aid in masking your scent.
