Carey started in- spiring us when she was nine. She showed us strength, hope, and courage. Ev- eryone who knew her or became familiar with her fi ght against can- cer was touched. Perhaps in her short life, Carey Volunteer Shirley Lee helps a gentleman shop for his wife and children at U.C.A.N.’s food pantry. Items available include canned goods and frozen foods. Janice Scott, clothes sorter volunteer, 14 years. It is called U.C.A.N. - U.pper C.leveland A.rea N.eeds. Vera Falls came up with the idea, and with the support of local churches she got it started in 1971. Located in a building which once housed the Lawndale doctor, Dr. Forest Bliss, it was purchased in 1972. Since then, this upper county organization had reached out and helped many of those in need. U. C. A. N. offers food, clothing and fi nancial assistance through their set policies. Those qualifying are placed on a 4, 6, or 9 month program. All the food and merchandise is donated. Aside from the Executive Director, this mecca of assistance is staffed by dedicat- ed volunteers. For example, Frances Brice, who is 81 years old, has been there for “32 years, and 4 months” as she says. JoAnn Greene, and Janice Scott both have volunteered for 14 years. The entire organization consist of neighbors reaching out to help other neighbors in upper Cleveland County . This crises emergency food pantry allows a person to select groceries, including meats, according to their qualifi cations. It also provides clothing and features a thrift store fi lled with bargains for the local gentry. You can even fi nd furniture. U.C.A.N. is open 9 a.m. until 12 noon Monday through Friday and no appointment is necessary. For information you can call 704-538-8417. U.C.A.N. is located downtown at 230 E. Main Street, Lawndale. Soon, there will be a new sign out front that should make the facility easier to locate. –M. A.
