OCTOBER 2010 – It's A Good Life Early Flu Vaccines Supplement To Shelby Shopper & Info Senior's Lifestyle Publication - Page 3 In 2009 a new flu virus began spreading around the world and triggered the first flu pandemic in 40 years. The 2009 H1N1 flu virus caused thousands of hospitalizations and deaths in the U.S. It hasn’t gone away. Health experts expect the virus to continue circulating in the U.S. this fall and winter. Because of that, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone six months of age and older get vaccinated against the flu. Flu vaccine makers will include protection from 2009 H1N1 virus in this year’s seasonal flu vaccine. So only one vaccination is necessary for most people. In addition to vaccination, the N.C. Division of Public Health encourages you to con- tinue practicing health habits to protect yourself from flu viruses: * Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. * Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. * Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way. * Stay home if you are sick. You should stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone, except to get medical care or for other necessities. Your fever should be gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine. Please, this flu season: Protect Yourself. Protect Your Family. Protect Your Coworkers. National Memory Screening Day November 16, 2010 In honor of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month (November), the Neal Senior Center (100 TR Harris Drive, Shelby, NC 28150) is proud to announce that we have been selected to be a National Memory Screening Site for National Memory Screening Day, which is an initiative of the National Alzheimer’s Foundation of America on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. It is estimated that as many as 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. The number is escalating in line with the aging population; the first baby boomers turn 65 in 2011. Advanced age is the greatest risk factor, with the incidence of the disease doubling every five years between 65 and 95. This marks AFA’s eighth annual National Memory Screening Day. Sites nationwide, such as the Senior Center, are participating in this momentous initiative. National Memory Screening Day serves as a starting point for discussions about mem- ory concerns and lifestyle changes—diet, managing stress, physical exercise—that may help people age successfully. Memory problems could be caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other medical conditions. A memory screening averages five to ten minutes, and consists of questions and tasks to assess memory. Retired healthcare professionals from Cleveland County will serve as screening administrators. Screening is a safe, cost-efficient intervention that can reassure the healthy individual, promotes successful aging and, when indicated, directs individuals to appropriate clinical resources. It does not diagnose any illness, but can indicate whether someone should pursue a medical exam. It is estimated that missed diagnoses of dementia may be as high as 90 percent. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is a national nonprofit organization head- quartered in New York that is focused on care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses, and their families. Call 866-AFA-8484 or visit www.alzfdn.org. For more information, to set up an appointment for the screening, or if you have questions regarding the screenings to be held at the Neal Senior Center, please call 704-482-3488.
