Poplar Street, Petersburg Turnovers halt Chargers comeback in 24-13 loss to South Spencer By Arri J. McDonald Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central traveled to South Spencer for their third game of the season last Friday night and lost 24-13. For the third week in a row the Char- gers allowed their opponent a double-digit lead midway through the first half. The Chargers spent the rest of the night chipping away from a 17-point deficit, but, ultimately four lost fumbles proved too costly. South Spencer returned the opening kickoff to the 35-yard line, but, the Charger defense held strong. Rebel Quarter- back Nate Hurt completed a short pass, but a tackle for loss by senior Isaac Marchino and a Rebel incomplete pass forced a three and out. After a 48 yard punt, the Chargers took over on their own 16 yard line. Sophomore quarterback Matthew Meadows hit Braden Howald for 40 yards on third and five and the Charger of- fense was rolling. Rushes by Jagar Dent and Nate Kell re- sulted in another first down in- side the Rebel 30. However, a personal foul on the next play negated a Grant Boyd 12-yard run and stopped PC's momen- tum. Howald was tackled for a loss on fourth and one from the Rebel 23 to turn the ball over on downs. With the ball inside their own 25, the Rebel quarterback put the offense on his back. Hurt completed four passes for 62 yards and added 13 yards on the ground, finishing the drive with a 19-yard touch- down pass to put the Rebels ahead. The kick sailed wide and South Spencer led 6 0 with 1:03 left in the first. Dent returned the ensuing kickoff to the Charger 23-yard line. Pike Central chipped away as the offense moved toward mid-field. The Char- gers gained two first downs on a Dent eight-yard run and a Meadows completion to sophomore Conner Loveless. Penalties once again stopped the Charger drive. A personal foul penalty forced a third and 25. Howald gained 15 yards on a pass from Meadows, but the Chargers were forced to punt. Peyton Howald pinned the Rebels inside the 20 with a 38-yard kick at 8:37 mark of the second quarter. On the next play, the Rebels struck for their longest play of the night. Hurt hit Dar- ren Kinney, who had slipped behind the defense, for an 83-yard score. This time the Rebels completed a short pass for the conversion. Rebels 14 Chargers 0. After a touchback, Pike Central went to the ground. Howald took a sweep 17-yards around the end and Dent add- ed a 15-yarder on the next play. However, the Chargers Girls soccer beats Boonville in overtime 4-2 By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net A short-staffed Charger girls soccer team held on in regulation to a 0-0 tie, then won on penalty kicks 4-2 against PAC foe Boonville. It is their second win this year on penalty kicks. "We were short-handed and only had 12 to start the game. We had a few injuries during the game, and ever y- one fought through these and played ver y well," said Char- ger Coach Chad Western. "We played defense for the entire game, as they have a few weapons on offense, and we couldn't let them get going and build a lead," said Western of the Charger strat- egy. "They had several shots, but ver y few quality shots. Against Boonville the Char- gers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Boonville scored to make it 2-1 early in the second half. They then traded goals throughout the second half to the 4-3 final score. "It was the same scoring as when we beat them in the finals of the Evansville tour- ney. It was the same type of performance. A lot of effort on our part," said Charger Head Coach David Hay. On Saturday, the Chargers fell behind 1-0 in the first half to Princeton. But the Chargers scored early in the second half to tie it. Princeton managed to go ahead 2-1 just before light- ning caused a 30-minute delay of the game.
