St. Rd. 57 Petersburg Morning worship at 10:30 a.m. The church is located south of Petersburg on State Road 57. David Mullis, Pastor Hope Barnett, Reporter SPURGEON METHODIST CHURCH 11505 N. Hwy. 61 Spurgeon Pastor Cell 812-202- 8903 or church office 812-922-8215 Church ser vice 9 a.m.; Fri- day Bible study at 1 p.m. "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ash- es, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righ- teousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glori- fied" (Isaiah 61:1, 3 KJV). God has a way of respond- ing in areas of our lives where we've experienced disaster. Just like the prophet Isaiah says, God can provide beauty in places that once were ash- es and cause joy in times of mourning. And as God was with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the fier y furnace (see Daniel 3), God is with us through the fires we face. As we face struggles of ever y kind, our human lim- itations may prevent us from seeing through to the other side where beauty may await us. But God sees it all, is with us through it all, and is able to comfort all who mourn. Josh Sanders, Pastor Sherry Julian, Reporter WHITE RIVER CHAPEL UMC 3555 W. SR 56 Bowman 812-582-8896 Sunday worship 9 a.m.; Sun- day school 10:15 a.m. We are exploring the words in Philippians 4:4-9 and how they can help us thrive in cha- os. So many trials come into our lives and along with the business of life. These things can easily choke out the Life of God in us. But praise God, "But seek ye first the King- dom of God, and His righ- teousness; and all these things will be added unto you" (Mat- thew 6:33). What things will be added? God's order back into our lives—a peace that passes all understanding—He is in con- trol. Facebook: White River Chapel UMC, Jeff Pinney. Sunday and Wednesday evening ser vices are at 6 p.m. All times CDT (Gibson Co.) The Yes Zone by T.D. Jakes The art of sur viving painful moments is living in the "yes" zone. We need to learn to re- spond to God with a yes when doors are open and a yes when they are closed. Our prayer must be: I trust your decisions Lord, and I know that if the door is closed, What will a person do? We are Christ's visible wit- ness on earth. Jesus said you are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything but is thrown out and tram- pled underfoot (Mt 5:13). We also use salt as a preser va- tive! We are witnessing what happens to the world when it rejects the salt of God. I heard a church leader say we need more Christians and fewer church members. There is a difference. Some people who warm a pew on an occasional Sunday have no genuine convictions; church is more like an insur- ance policy or a social club. Committed Christians stand for the truth of God. They be- lieve the church is called to lead and set an example. The scriptures, not science, not government, or your neigh- bor, tells them how to live. The church isn't run by opin- ion polls, court rulings, polit- ical ideology, or progressive agendas. Christians have been 'called out' of darkness into Christ's mar velous light. To be a Christian is to be trans- formed from a caterpillar into a butterfly, so to speak. What I once was is no more. A new creature has emerged who now sees how dark this world is. A Christian living in both worlds will suffer persecu- tion. Since the beginning of time, God's people have been persecuted: Abel was the first believer persecuted by the faithless. Jesus said your greatest enemy are those in your own house. It was Abel's brother, Cain, who killed him. Both brothers sought God's approval and blessing; but Abel presented himself to God in a manner he knew would please God (faith) and Cain dishonored God and presented an offering to God on his terms. Even in rejection, God told Cain his offering would be ac- cepted if he approached God correctly. What was Cain's response? The man killed his brother. He was angry at God, and he vented his fury, rage and re- sentment upon his brother. He was incorrigible and would not submit to God. Sound fright- enedly familiar? What has changed from then to now? The world doesn't want us and wishes we would go away because we stand as a witness against them. Often, we wish we could depart and be with God. The world needs the church because the church is the only thing holding back the power of darkness. Jesus said, Blessed are you, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake (Matt 5:11): But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you (Matt 5:44); Remember the word that I said to you, ser vants are not greater than their master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also (John 15:20)! The persecution of Chris- tians will not go away but will intensify. We find the ultimate paradox explained by Jesus shortly before his arrest and crucifixion: I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world, you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world (John 16:33)! There is nothing wrong with praying, Lord Come quickly. gets so excited about things like that. He has some prob- lems with being a hyper, but he sure does have a kind heart. When he acts out he feels so bad about it whenev- er he calms down. I can remember my hyper show-of f days and I always regretted my bad times. There have been many times as an adult, whenev- er I could quickly become un-lovable and I always felt so terrible over the con- squences of some of my more stupid moments. So you see we may not always act out, but we have to often fight the urges within. Connie had her colonoos- copy Thursday and the doc- tor who done her procedure found something he thought was probably causing her pain and discomfort. It was a relief to hear that it wasn't ver y dangerous and could possibly get better on its own. She is feeling better and I thank God for the bet- ter news and for God being there for her. I was boasting about my grandkids awhile back. I would like to say they both love one another, but while one is loving the other one is loving to pick on the oth- er. Most of the time they mix about like oil and water even while being good. Really they are loving children but their love is an adventure. My wife became a year older last Saturday and we all enjoyed a meal at Montana Mike's in Vincennes. We are older, but our love for one an- other is still ver y much alive even when we have those heated discussions all cou- ples have. Sunday morning we heard a friend singing the scripture and it was extremely enjoy- able. So Sister Vicky Russell is a ver y talented singer and she brings the scripture alive. I want to close with a thought for a each of us and that is God will not let you down. Your answer may well be something other than what you asked for, but it won't disappoint. Let's all challenge one another to be that blessing to others that God needs us to be. PAWS WEEK PAWS WEEK Pet of the TUXIE The cat has nine lives. Our approachable Lord There is not a hint of one person who was afraid to draw near [Jesus]. There were those who mocked him. There were those who were envious of him. There were those who misunderstood him. There were those who revered him. But there was not one person who considered him too holy, too divine or too celestial to touch. There was not one person who was reluctant to approach him for fear of be- ing rejected. Remember that. Join us this Sunday as we unpack these verses and con- sider how our discipleship is formed by the Word of God! Rob Henson, Pastor Amy Melhiser, Secretary Wesleyan OTWELL WESLEYAN CHURCH 2277 N. Mechanics Street Otwell Pastor 812-354-3028 Sunday school at 9:30 a.m.; morning worship at 10:30 a.m.; Sunday evening worship ser vice at 6:30 p.m. One day while Carl was just finishing his watering at the church gardens, three gang members approached him. Ignoring their attempt to intimidate him, he simply asked, "Would you like a drink from the hose?" The tallest and toughest-looking of the three said, "Yeah, sure," with a malevolent little smile. As Carl offered the hose to him, the other two grabbed Carl's arm, throwing him down. The assailants stole his watch and his wallet, and then fled. Carl tried to get himself up, but he had been thrown down on his bad leg. "Just some punk kids," he thought. A few weeks later the lead- er of the gang stopped to see Carl. I've come to give your stuff back. "I learned some- thing from you," he said. "I ran with that gang and hurt people. But when we came and hurt you, instead of yell- ing and fighting back, you tried to give us a drink. You didn't hate us for hating you. "I couldn't sleep after we stole your stuff, so here it is back." Some weeks later Carl had died. A flyer went up advertis- ing for a new caretaker. As the minister looked at the applica- tions he recognized one name, it was the same young man who had returned the stolen watch and wallet to Carl. He knew that Carl's kindness had turned this man's life around. The man went to work and over the next several years, he tended the flowers and vegeta- bles just as Carl had done. "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ for- gave you" (Ephesians 4:32).
