PC boys soccer wins River City Tournament By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central's Joey Ridao scored four goals in the cham- pionship game to lead the Chargers to a 4-3 come-from- behind win over Boonville. Pike Central jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, but then in the second half fell behind 3-2 with about 20 minutes to play. "Boonville really came out in the second half and attacked us," said Charger Coach David Hay. Pike Central eventually got their footing and Ridao knocked in two more goals in the final 20 minutes to give the Chargers the Championship. "I'm just unbelievably proud of all of them. They worked so hard this weekend," said Hay. He said they didn't get home from the Friday night game until about 10 p.m. and then at 10 a.m. on Saturday they were back on the bus to play in the afternoon game. Pike Central won their first round game over Heritage Christian 6-1 on Friday night. In their second game against Somerset Christian of Ken- tucky they lost 3-1. Hay said because their Friday night win had locked them into the cham- pionship match on Friday night he played a lot of reserves in the afternoon game against Somer- set to keep his starters fresh for the Championship game. "Our midfielders and de- fenders worked unbelievably hard," said Hay. He said the team is playing much better since their open- ing loss 1-0 loss to South Knox last week. "We switched some players around to different po- sitions and we are playing a dif- ferent formation this year than we did last year. It is taking some time for them to get used to that formation," said Hay about the team's improvement. Poplar Street, Petersburg The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, August 24, 2022 B-1 Turnovers hurt Chargers in 44-20 opening loss to Riverton-Parke By Arri J. McDonald The Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net For Charger fans, the big- gest play of the night never made it into the official score book. Freshman Grant Boyd snatched the opening kickof f out of the air and raced 60 yards through the defense for a touchdown. The crowd was rocking, but, in a second the excitement was over as officials signaled an illegal block in the back. With early momentum gone, the Char- gers dug a three-touchdown hole in the first quar ter and spent the rest of the night fighting back, ultimately r un- ning out of gas in the final quar ter to fall 44-20 Friday to River ton-Parke.- The opening touch- down-nullifying penalty placed the ball at the Pike Central 46, but Charger quar- terback Matthew Meadows was sacked on third and sev- en from the River ton-Parke 42, forcing a 27-yard Jagar Dent punt. Four plays later, River ton Park faked a hand- of f and the Charger defense bit. Panther quar terback Kyle Price floated a deep ball to Derron Hazzard who slipped behind the defense and ran it in for a 68-yard score. With the two-point conversion, it was Panthers 8 Chargers 0, mid-way through the first quar ter. The Chargers went three and out on their second drive. Four plays later Price punched in a quar terback keeper from eight yards out for the Panthers' sec- ond score, but, this time the Charger defense held on the Charger golfers beat Washington 213-235 By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Editor editor@pressdispatch.net The Lady Chargers golf team continues to pick- up wins and lower their scores as the season goes on. Thursday night they beat Washington 213-235 at Prides Creek. It was the Chargers' best score of the year as two of the Chargers broke 50. Brailey Mills and Mabrey Shoultz both shot 48s in the match for co-medalist hon- ors. Mills had three pars on holes one, four and nine. Shoultz made par on hole seven but avoided any big numbers with nothing worse than a double and only two of those. It was Shoultz' best round of her career. "She just got going and played with confidence and kept it rolling," said Char- ger Coach Jarrod Gideon. Addy Russell and Kaliea Hartke both shot 58s for the Chargers to round out their scoring. Other scores posted by the Chargers were Grace Goodpasture at 59, Aubree McGowan at 60 and Chloe Williams as 63. The win improved Pike Central's record to 4-3 on the season.
