WHOLESALE DEALERS IN RETAILERS FOR By Mike Sandifar Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net David Hay may be new to the Pike Central Varsity Soc- cer Sidelines in 2022, but he is no stranger to the Char- ger Soccer Program, as the Glasgow, Scotland, native has worked with the Pike Central Middle School Soccer Teams the past three seasons (2019, 2020 and 2021), before accept- ing the reins as the head boys' soccer coach at Pike Central High School. Hay inherits six seniors from a team that posted a 9-8-1 record in 2021, including a 6-5 mark sixth place) in the PAC, and the first year the six se- niors will provide ability, lead- ership, and experience to the PCHS line-up for the coming soccer campaign. "Our entire team is ver y coachable, and they all want to win," confided Hay in a pre-season inter view. "Last year, we were a ver y strong defensive team—De- fense was definitely a strong point for the team, but this year, we want to maintain our defensive strength while add- ing a strong attack to the of- fensive side of the ball. "This team has a great atti- tude, and they have all been easy to work with at this point in the year." The Chargers only gave up 16 goals in 2021 in 18 match- es, and Hay gives much of that credit to Payton Howald, a senior. "Payton is a really really, good goalkeeper," stated Hay, "He is ver y skilled at his posi- tion, and he has the ability and quickness to take away shots from offensive players from many angles." Hay has 20 student/ath- letes on the Pike Central Var- sity Roster, six seniors, four juniors, five sophomores, and five freshmen. In addition to Howald, the other five seniors on the ros- ter are: Isaac Fair, Isaac Bur- dette, Nolan Nelson, Joey Rid- ao, and Miguel Ferrera. The four juniors are: Jonas Martinez, Ethan Meadows, Noah Miller, and Chase Ridao. Sophomores Andrew Woods and Riley Mosby and freshman Cameron Roy all started in last week's (Tues- day evening) 7-1 conference win over Tell City. "We were obviously ver y ex- cited to open the season with a 7-1 league victor y last week," said Hay. "We hope that win will give us confidence in ourselves and our play as we move ahead on the year." Hay, a 2008 graduate of Oakland City University, played soccer for the Mighty Oaks and helped lead his col- legiate team to the National Christian College Athletic As- sociation (NCCAA) National Final Eight as a senior in 2007. The Chargers fell in the first round of the 2021 Class 3A Sectional Tournament to conference foe Princeton in a two-overtime contest that was decided by penalty kicks. The loss was particularly tough to take for Pike Central, as the Chargers had defeated the Tigers in regular season play. Hay sees Gibson Southern, a team that went undefeated in PAC action a year ago, and Forest Park and Washington, as the 2022 conference favor- ites for 2022. He also likes the chances of his Chargers.
