By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central's volleyball team had a solid competitive season last year going 8-13. Coach Stephanie Shedd said they want to keep the mo- mentum going for ward and improve on that season. She thinks she has the per- sonnel to do just that this year. Pike Central has two three -year starters this year to rely on. Carly Kavanaugh returns this year as a setter. It is a position she has started at the for the Chargers for three years. "She runs our offense and does a good job of setting and she is a really strong ser ver," said Coach Shedd about Kava- naugh. Lexie Onyett is the other three-year starter who will be the Chargers' libero. She started both her freshman and sophomore years at the same position. Eve Burns is another back row player with a good ser ve. A sophomore, Shedd said she thinks Burns will play a lot for the Chargers. Payton Readle is a senior who will rotate into the line-up in the back row for the Char- gers. On the front row, senior Alyana Sharp will be the right- side hitter. "She is a strong hitter and strong blocker," said Shedd. It will be the first year for Sharp in the starting line-up. As a sophomore she was in- jured and last year she played junior varsity. Fellow senior Ashlyn Shoul- tz will be the left-side hitter. Her versatility will allow her to play the whole rotation. "She will play the whole game as our left-side hitter. She is ver y good in the back row and ser ving as well," said Shedd. Emily Kreig is going to be the Chargers' middle hitter this year. Lakin Sorgius will also play some at the left-side hitter po- sition. "She has a really good ser ve," said Shedd. Liberty Taylor will mix into the front row as well. Senior Delaney Welch will play in the back row during the rotations. Shedd said three freshmen on the team, Mia Hudson, Heidi Woodford and Tar yn Fiscus will mostly play junior varsity, but can come in and play if needed on the varsity. This year's manager, Haley Fulcher had shoulder surger y preventing her from playing so she will be the manager. "I think we are playing to- gether," said Shedd. She said with three new hit- ters in the line-up this year the experienced back line players are "meshing together well and have good intensity. So hopefully that will carr y on this season. "We have a really good back row. I think they will be able to dig out a lot balls and keep them in play for us. She said one of the things they focus on early in prac- tice this year is their ser ving accuracy. "We don't want to be giving away points with bad ser ves," said Shedd. Coach Shedd said their team goal is to win the section- al. "We want to come home with a sectional win, improve on our season last year with a winning season and keep the momentum going."
