Act your age! When someone is acting fool- ishly, have you ever heard any- one say, "Act your age, not your shoe size?" Of course, this popu- lar slogan would not be much of a rebuke for a nine-year-old! That might be why I remember that when I was a boy, we used to say, "Act your age, not your IQ." Now that's a pretty insulting thing to say to a nine-year-old! While it is important to act your age at any age, it's even more important for a Christian to act in such a way that is becom- ing to the truth of God's Word, as Paul told Timothy to remind older men, saying, "Speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: That the aged men be sober… temper- ate…" (Titus 2:1,2). If aged Christian men want to live in such a way that is be- coming to sound doctrine, they must be sober. The only thing sadder than a drunk is an old drunk. Many years ago I used to minister at the Chicago Gospel Mission. I can remember putting my arm around old drunks while speaking to them about the Lord, and thinking how hard it must be to overcome an addiction that would have been more easily conquered earlier in life. What a testimony to the wisdom of Sol- omon's admonition, "Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth" (Eccl. 12:1). But the word "sober" has an- other meaning in Scripture. Paul wrote the Romans, "I say… to every man… not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think so- berly" (Rom. 12:3). Do you see how that verse defines the word "sober" as not thinking too highly of yourself? If you're wondering why Paul would have to say this to aged Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. "In His Time" A chorus from several years ago proclaims that God "makes all things beautiful in His time." We would like that time to be now, but God's timing is not our timing. He doesn't tell us the exact time when Jesus will return and all things will become new, but we can de- pend on God fulfilling His promises. "He will wipe ever y tear from their eyes. None of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether [it be] by life, or by death. For to me to live [is] Christ, and to die [is] gain. But if I live in the flesh, this [is] the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I want not. For I am in a strait be- tween two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better. I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me" (Ro. 14:7, 8; I Co. 10:24 6:20; Php. 1:20-23; Ga. 2:19, 20). Gar y Watson, Pastor Jenni Caudel, Children Leader Kathy Henderson, Reporter Catholic STS PETER & PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH 711 Walnut Street Petersburg D-6 Wednesday, August 24, 2022 The Press-Dispatch What's happening in your life? If you are like ever yone else you have been busy. It seems as though there is al- ways something to do. Last Monday one of my friends came by to help us blow off some debris from our roof. It bothers me a little that I am old enough I have to have help . I don't trust my footing on our roof and I'd rather have help than to be laid up from a fall. With Autumn just around the corner it will be time to tackle all the leaves which makes such a mess. I had brought some furni- ture home to clean up from mom's old house. With all the rain we have had it run under the doors and ruined one of the pieces I was going to clean up and use. It was my bad because I had given some thought to putting it up on some cribbing to keep it up from any water getting to it. Our granddaughter went to her first day to pre-school last Tuesday at Stepping Stones. She liked her first day but she wasn't so sure about the next two days. She finally gave up and went because mamaw convinced her. Sometimes mamaws can wotk miracles. One day I spent some time filling up the crack between the garage floor and the con- crete that makes up the ap- proach to the garage. I didn't tr y to slope the new concrete Abortion is blood money The fur y against the Su- preme Court's ruling over- turning Roe vs Wade con- tinues to intensify. Abortion advocates are furious with the Republican controlled Indiana legislator and governor. Indi- ana is the first state to enact legislation banning abortion, unless a pregnant woman's life is at risk, for incidents of rape and incest, and lethal fe- tal anomalies. In a statement provided to NPR, the giant pharmaceuti- cal firm Eli Lilly is concerned the law will hinder their 'abili- ty to attract diverse scientific, engineering and business tal- ent from around the world.' It also said it will have to plan its future growth outside of Indi- ana. Another corporate giant in Indiana, Cummins, said it opposes the law. It parrots an eerily similar statement say- ing the abortion ban will 'im- pede our ability to attract and retain top talent and influence our decisions as we continue to grow our footprint with a focus on selecting welcoming and inclusive environments.' Both businesses cite the new law conflicts with their compa- ny beliefs. Large employers have now become shakedown artists. If a law is passed, they dislike, they threaten to leave the state and take their bag of money and go elsewhere. Is this not a definition of extortion? Abortion is a big money- making industr y.
