Postcards and notes of interest at Sweet's Column, Winslow, IN 47598. The Patoka River in Winslow is lower than half. We have had no rain this past week and the temps have been comfortable in the 80s with middle 60s at nighttime. The corn is tall, but the beans are taller than last year's crop. Animals seen in the area were five deer and two of them were babies. Momma stood still as we stopped and the babies tried to not move, but then I got antsy and move, but the others stood still. It was a sight to see. I saw a rabbit, a turtle crossing the road, a crane standing in the murky water and a squirrel eating a small green apple in the tree. Since the last big storm that came through Winslow and took out trees and lots of limbs, many yards, after three weeks, have limbs piled up to be taken away when they find a place to put them. At Riverside Park there were limbs picked up by the trees, but they were put in front of the shelter house. Several people who pass by our town have said Winslow looks aw- ful this year. So Norm talked to several people to see if the limbs could be picked up, but with the response he got, it made him a little upset. So if you need something done, do it yourself. So he did. A fter 7 1/2 truck loads from that area to our burn pile, they are now ashes. Then the next day some limbs were being re- moved from yards. The 57 Bones family was relaxing on the front porch, as they get ready to pose in another eye catching scene. Last Thursday the 11th was the start of the Sweet Corn Festival where the Oakland City Lions Club served fried chicken or smoked pork chop dinners with corn on the cob. Norm and I were there to hear Lowell Thomas and friend as they play guitars and sang songs that make you smile or tap your foot. Guess who we met there as he sat down to eat before he had another appearance in Princeton? The family is growing with grandchildren and everyone is well. We also saw several Pike County stars outside while another band played. It has been really nice to sit on the porch and watch the clouds roll by and feel the breeze every so often. Sever- al children ride their bikes or scooters on the road and wave. We helped our daugh- ter, Laura, pick up some baby clothes, a bag of hair bows and other items she will need when the baby arrives. Her work threw her a shower with food and dessert. She got dia- pers and wipes. The water tower going up on half-mile hill, has men working above the tank. I had mentioned our new officer, Alfred Brauneck- er will work in the town of Winslow and Winslow made him feel welcomed last Fri- day night, his first day, with a few incidents. Welcome to Winslow, Alfred. Sunday the 14th was the 80th Poehlein reunion at the Snyder Community Center, where the floor in the big room looks nice with a blue color with specks of black. The room was set up in the theme of Military Fami- ly Heroes. A table was set up for pictures of our mili- tary family. We also had an ammo box with toy soldiers and you guessed how many. Greg guessed the correct amount of 167 and won a prize. Anna's family had the most family there. Anna and George's family, I believe, has six generations. Group pictures were taken by Sky- lar Burkett. Mom handed the 50 year goblet to Connie Poehlein and Greg Poehlein. There was a small auction of items and Great Aunt Mildred Ashby's paintings. Hand made pot holders went to each family and mine is yellow and black. Each table had a military sign and door prizes for a few. We all had a great time and the food was delicious with the ham and chicken catered. There were 61 family members who had an enjoyable day of laughs and hugs for Mom, who had her hair in small pig tails on top of her head. I got to see the many young children and how they enjoyed the day. One of the sayings was If you are caught counting each toy soldier, then you were to give us 20 push ups, but that didn't happen. When we all left for the day, we to up to Main St and the sports field exit, we saw a big groundhog cross- ing the busy road. The memo- rial table had three pass on.
