Pike Central adds five new teammates in freshmen Jacoby Smith Dylan and Quintin McCormick, ju- niors Dylan Charles and Ken- ny Gerard and sophomore Ethan Mann. Senior Peyton Chanley ran third (19 :29) for the team at the 49 -team Valley K ick-Off to begin the season after run- ning 13th in last year's Alan Hopewell Class race. Sopho- more Blaine Barnett ran 18th in last year's sectional clock- ing 19 :16 and has cut time to 18 :48 for 147th at last week's K ick-off. That got him the top Charger spot in front of junior Jeremy Delobel who ran sec- ond for the team in 18 :54. Delobel finished 16th at sec- tional in 19 : 07.6 with Chanley 14th in 19 : 06.9. Senior Charger Dallas Re- utepohler placed second for the boys at the Hopewell Ju- nior/Senior class race last year clocking 20 :24. Sophomore Carter Black- well ran 50th as a freshman in last year's sectional and cut more than two minutes from that to place fifth for the team a Terre Haute at 21: 05. Pike Central Junior Shane Woodhull ran 29th at sec- tional and sixth for the team in the Terre Haute K ick-off. Sophomore Tyler DeCoursey ran seventh for the Chargers in the kick-off and was 55th at sectional with much im- proved speed to start the 2022 season. New to the team this sea- son are Dylan Charles, Jacoby Smith, Ethan Mann, Kenny Gerard and Quintin McCor- mick. They rounded out the scoring at the 49 -team Valley K ick-Off in Terre Haute this past weekend. Dylan Charles ran a 22 :17 to eighth place among team- mates. Jacoby Smith finished next with a 22 :21 followed by Ethan Mann in at 24: 08 and Quintin McCormick next in 25:19. Charger veteran coach Randy Graham said, "Kenny Gerard ran track and trans- ferred in to Pike Central and will run cross country for us." Peyton Chanley finished the season last year in 20th place in the regional with a 17:15 time and then he clocked 17:21 for 109th in the semi-state. Blaine Bar- nett ran an 18 :13 to 47th and Jeremy Delobel was 53rd in 18 :26. Shane Woodhull improved to 18 :37 at regional placing 58th. Tyler DeCoursey ran a 21:46 at regional for 84th and Carter Blackwell was 86th in 22 :35. Coach Graham continued, "I like where we are, with sev- eral who are coming up to challenge. We have an extra five in depth now with seven returners. Peyton finished re- al strong last season and was competing at regional and ran a good race at semi-state." Coach Graham, back for a second year with 18 years at Pike Central under his belt after seven years away, feels " The team has made good progress since last year start- ing out with good times at the Valley K ick-off." That course with 49 teams competing is where the NCA A finals are hosted as well as the state fi- nals. Graham added, "We fin- ished third in the sectional last year and we had a nice summer. W hen we get some meets under our belts and be- gin to pack up with this group of runners, it could prove to be a successful year." "Senior Dallas Reutepohler returns 100 percent and se- nior Peyton Chanley finished really strong last year. With Blaine Barnett and Jeremy Delobel making their marks early on, a tight pack up front in many races is possible." Coach Graham said he thought the team could have a good run at the regional and get to semi-state with the re- turners and new runners. The 2022 Pike Central boys cross country team members are: front row (l to r) Dylan Charles, Shane Woodhull, Jeremy Delobel, Tyler DeCoursey and Kenny Gerard; back row: Carter Blackwell, Peyton Chanley, Blaine Barnett, Dallas Reutepohler, Quintin McCormick, Jacoby Smith and Ethan Mann.
