Gibson Southern blanks defending state champions By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Coach Chris May's Gibson Southern Titans traveled to Huntingburg Thurs- day evening for a Pocket Athletic Con- ference (PAC) encounter with South- ridge, and the Titans came away with a 10 -0 win over the defending state champs for their fifth consecutive victory of the 2022 season. The triumph over the Raiders put the Titans at 13-4 on the year, including a 6 -4 conference record in the 13-team league, while the loss dropped Southridge to 9 -10 on the 2022 diamond campaign, includ- ing a 5 -4 league mark. Gibson Southern wasted no time in scoring against Southridge, getting two runs in the top of the first frame of a five-inning outing, and then put another seven runs on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning to go up 9 -0. The Titans did not score in the third or fourth inning, but in the top of the fifth, the eventual winners pushed a run across the plate to make the score 10 -0, and when Titan defense held the Raid- ers without a run in the bottom half of the fifth frame, the game was over, due to the 10 -run rule. The Titans pounded out 11 hits against the Raiders, including four doubles, two by senior Levi Dickerson, one by class- mate Oliver Hamilton and one junior Bradyn Epperson, while seniors Logan Thomas, Drew Foster, Logan Maurer, Re- gan Farmer, and Kaden Hurless all had singles in the lop-sided contest. Dickerson had three RBIs, and Ham- ilton drove in another pair of scores to lead the Titans. Foster and Hurless each drove in a run. Gibson Southern pitcher Justin Stimp- son tossed a two-hitter in shutting out Southridge. Stimpson struck out a trio of Raiders and walked four in his five in- nings on the mound. The 13-4 Titans (6 -4 PAC) were sched- uled to travel to Mt. Carmel, Illinois, on Friday to tangle with the Aces, and yes- terday, Gibson Southern was scheduled to take on Jasper at Fort Branch. On Thursday, the Titans are slated to travel to Tell City for a conference con- test with the Marksmen at 5:30 p.m., and Monday, Gibson Southern is set to play at home against Wood Memorial in a non-conference battle at 5:00 p.m. Titan baseball tops Boonville 6-3 By Mike Sandifar Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern topped Pocket Ath- letic Conference opponent Boonville 6 - 3 in Boonville on Wednesday to improve its season record to 12-4, including 5 -4 in league competition. A fter both teams failed to push a run across the plate in the first inning, the Titans touched the Pioneers for three runs in the top of the second inning to take a 3-0 advantage over the hosts, then came back to plate another two runs in the top of the third to up the lead to 5 -0 over Boonville. The Pioneers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third frame to reduce the Titan lead to 5 -2, and Gibson South- ern scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to up the lead to 6 -2. The Titans did not score in the top of the fifth inning, but Boonville put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 6 -3, which tuned out to be the final score of the game, as neither team scored over the final two innings. The Titans were held to just six hits in the contest, but one of the hits was a home run by senior Oliver Hamilton. Senior Levi Dickerson had a double for the winners, while classmates Logan Thomas, Drew Foster, and Colton Okes and junior Bradyn Epperson all added a single to the Gibson Southern hit list. The Titans worked Boonville for six walks in the game, while just two Pio- neers received a free pass to first base from Okes, who tossed a complete game for Gibson Southern.
