LADY TITAN TRACK & FIELD Good Luck at Sectionals B-2 Sports Tuesday, May 10, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times Lady Titans go 4-1 with Terre Haute By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern beat Terre Haute North 4-1 on Saturday. Gracia Jones won at number one singles after her opponent, Caroline Ef- fner, had to retire from the match. Jones was leading 4- 1 in the second set. She won the first set 7-5. Helen Kiesel won the num- ber two singles match over THN's Olivia Effner 6 -2, 6 -0. Sydney Purcell won a com- petitive match with Alain Belmore, at number three singles. Purcell won the first set 6 -2, but then went into a tiebreaker, winning 13-11 in the second set. Lillie Booth and Lilly Schmitt, at number one dou- bles, beat Yewon Sung and Kenley Shoultz 6 -2, 7-6. They won the tiebreaker in the sec- ond set 7-1. Maura Kluesner and Gab- by Smitha lost in a three-set battle, at number two dou- bles. They won the first set 6 -3, but then lost the second 6 -1, and then lost a close 6 -4 in the third set. Lady Titan Tennis defeats North Posey By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Another Pocket Athletic Conference opponent; another win for the Lady Titan tennis team. Playing Thursday night in a gray haze that threatened rain the whole match, Gibson Southern beat North Posey 4- 1 in varsity play and 7-1 in JV play. Helen Kiesel and Sydney Purcell at number two and three singles and Lillie Booth and Lilly Schmitt at number one doubles all played over- whelming tennis as they beat their opponents 6 -0, 6 -0. Maria Kluesner and Emilee Bullock, playing at num- ber two doubles for the first time this season, beat North Posey's Alexa Simons and El- lie Carlson 6 -2, 6 -1. Graci Jones at number one singles started off strong for the Titans, beating Syd- ni Flowers 6 -1 in the first set. However, Flowers turned it around on Jones, winning the second set 6 -4 and then the de- ciding set 6 -3. In junior varsity match- es the Titans won nine of 10. Jayden Sorgius, Alyssa Wel- te, Mallory Maurer, Maddie Boes and Kelsey Spindler all won their singles matches 6 -0. In doubles, Kelsey Spindler and Gabby Smith won 6 -5, Lily Hirsch and Lindsey Garbers won 6 -0, Vanessa Foster and Charity Bylor 6 -5 and Jalis- sa Byrn and Emily Holzmey- er won 6 -5. Klem and Robin- son helped the team to fourth overall in the PAC, with 138' and 123'7" distances in the discus. Klen won the shot put with a distance of 41'8", while Robinson taped 39'10.75". Klem stepped up from the prelims, and added fourth place points in the 100 dash, with a 12.45 finish. Khale Campbell, Isaac Ivy, Cooper Townsend and Isaac Dill combined, for a sol- id second place in the sev- enth grade 4x100, clocking 52.17. Isaac Dill ran a 59.39 to fourth in the 400 meter dash, and Josiah Stroud was 13th in 1:02.55. Noah Kuester was fifth in the high jump (5:2"), and Isaac Dill placed ninth (5'). Lloyd Sellers was fifth in the 300 hurdles (46.53, just .03 out of third), with Jayden Cunningham ninth in 49.74. Klem, Merexx Kuester, Lloyd Sellers and Josiah Stroud ran a 50.92 to fifth, in the eighth grade 4x100 relay. Sellers was sixth in the 110 hurdles (18.37), and No- ah Kuester was eighth in 18.98. Sellers placed eighth in the 200 meter, clocking 25.82. Cooper Townsend, Khale Campbell, Isaac Dill and Kayden Cunningham placed fifth in the 4x400, with a time of 4:16.93. Kuester was a ninth place fin- isher in the pole vault, at 7" even. Ian Maikranz, Chance Wolf, Aidan Alston and Matt Wilzbacher were fifth in the 4x800 relay, with a time of 10.01.03. Wilzbacher and Alston were 10th and 11th in the 1600, running 5:29.70 and 5:36.24 respectively. Heritage Hills won with 117, and Gibson Southern was fourth with 78.50.
