He was born on May 18, 1944, to Granis Thomas and Vona (Brown) Thomas, in Oakland City. He worked as a CNA for al- most 30 years. He spent his time watching NASCAR rac- es and was an avid racing fan. He enjoyed watching base- ball in his free time. He was a handyman and his children can remember the many years he would fix up cars. He had a love for the outdoors, spend- ing time fishing, camping and gardening flowers. In his re- cent years, he took up antiqu- ing. He was a man of many hobbies. He will be missed by many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Granis and Vo- na Thomas. He is survived by his chil- dren, Tim ( Wendy) Thomas and Angie Hume; grandchil- dren, Connor Thomas, Emma Bagwell, Ashley Hume, Ash- ley (Connor) Mowery and Joshua Hume; great-grand- children, Ethan, Crimson and Daniel; and siblings, Larry and Sig Thomas, Nancy Gilm- our and Sandra Miller. There will be no services. CATHERINE IRENE RIT TERSK AMP Mrs. Catherine Irene Rit- terskamp, 92, of Washing- ton, passed away on the late morning of Thursday, April 15, 2021. She was born March 20, 1929, in Pike County, the daughter of the late Low- ell and Golda (Ferguson) Swain. She attended Petersburg High School and was a mem- ber of the graduating Class of 1947. She had worked in the office of Dr. Tom Davis in Washington as a labora- tory technician for 15 years. She was a member of Betha- ny Christian Church, where she volunteered assisting with the church bulletins. Having a servant's heart, she also volunteered with the Washington chapter of the Retired Seniors Volun- teer Program (RSVP). She was a life member of the Be- ta Sigma Pi sorority and had also served on the Daviess County Mental Health Asso- ciation Board. Always one to stay busy, she spent much of her leisure time reading and doing crossword puzzles. In her younger years, she also enjoyed camping. She and her husband also enjoyed entertaining family and friends, as well as hosting dinner parties for her hus- band's business associates. She is survived by her daughter, Jan (Dr. Rod- ney) Kalb; her stepchil- dren, Laurie (Terry) Braun and James R. Ritterskamp II; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in passing her husband, James R. Rit- terskamp; her son, Danny Lowell Woodall; her brother, Ermal Swain; and a sister-in- law, Pegge Ritterskamp. Funeral services were at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at Gill Funeral Ser- vice, Washington. Burial fol- lowed at Walnut Hill Ceme- tery in Petersburg. Visitation was from 11 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home. For those choosing to make a memorial contribu- tion, the family has suggest- ed those be offered to the Bethany Christian Church or R.S.V.P. both in Washing- ton. COLONEL CHARLES EUGENE HALE Colonel Charles Eugene Hale, 101, passed away on March 11, 2021. He was a Hoosier boy, born September 9, 1919, and raised in Winslow. He came into this world during the Roaring Twenties and grew up through the Great Depres- sion. Just before graduating college, he joined the Army Air Corps the day after Christ- mas in 1941 and headed off to fight in W WII. He embodied what it meant to be a member of America's Greatest Gener- ation. His courage, skill and tenacity of purpose were ad- mired by his colleagues and commanders. He understood the value of sacrifice for the greater good. He was a hum- ble man of indomitable will and unwavering values. He served in the United States Air Force for 30 years until his retirement in 1971. He achieved his goal of be- coming a B-17G bomber pilot and throughout his tour of du- ty, he was based out of Graf- ton-Underwood, England. He retired from his career as the Director of Manpower and Or- ganization at Air Force Logis- tics Command (AFLC). He served in this position in Wi- esbaden, Germany, and at sev- eral U.S. bases. As a member of the 547th Bombardment Squadron, which was one of the four squadrons assigned to the 384th bomb group, he flew a total of 31 missions between April and July of 1944. For combat missions flown out of England, he was awarded the Air Medal, three Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters to his Air Medal, and the Distinguished Flying Cross, in addition to his Eu- ropean-A frican-Middle East- ern Campaign Medal, W WII Victory Medal and American Campaign Medal. A fter the war, he served as a rescue pi- lot in the 10th Rescue Squad- ron out of Alaska, where his successful completion of a dif- ficult and dangerous mission earned him a commendation from the famous Norwegian pilot Col. Bernt Balchen. For his service after the war, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Air Force Commen- dation Medal, 1st Oak Leaf Cluster to the Legion of Mer- it, Small Arms Expert Marks- manship Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, Air Force Service Longevity Ser- vice Award with one Silver and one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster. In addition to his active ser- vice in the military, he contin- ued his academic studies. He earned his Bachelor's in His- tory from Indiana Universi- ty, and continued on to finish his Master's of Arts degree at Georgetown University. He earned this degree through two years of night school while serving as Chief of the Programs Division within the Special Warfare Directorate in the Pentagon. He had pre- viously been selected by the USAF Headquarters as one of 20 officers to attend a course on Psychological Warfare at Georgetown University, which heavily informed his masters thesis: "Measures Employed by the Communists to Con- trol the People of the Soviet Union." A fter retiring from the USAF, he decided to put his skills in antique furniture and clock work repair to good use, and ran a clock shop–first in Colorado and later in Cali- fornia. He never lost his love of fine woodwork and crafts- manship. He continued to col- lect and refinish clocks for his entire life. In order to hone his writing skills, he published a series of 52 articles for the Press-Dispatch about people, places and events of his life- time and before. He continued on to write several non-fiction works, screenplays and com- plete his autobiography. He and his wife, Barbara, always shared a love for travel, and once he retired from his clock shop duties, they were able to travel the world, making trips to Europe, Australia, Alaska, NANCY JOANNE ADAMS Nancy JoAnne (Banas) Ad- ams, 64, of Petersburg, passed away Friday, April 9, 2021, at Golden Living Center in Pe- tersburg. She was born July 10, 1956, in Terre Haute. She attended Paul Schulte High School in Terre Haute and graduated near the top of her class, then earned her bachelor's degree at Indiana State University, where she graduated with honors. She received her master's degree from Purdue and continued her education at Penn State. She taught Foreign Language at Clinton Central in northern Indiana, LaGrange, Ga., and Switzerland County in south- east Indiana. Finally, she taught Spanish and French at Princeton Community High School for 30 years, where she retired a few years ago. She es- pecially loved French. She en- joyed traveling and had spent time in Paris, France. She al- so enjoyed directing theater plays for the high school stu- dents, such as "How to Suc- ceed in Business," "Two by Two" and "Cats," and one of the biggest was an Easter play in Vevay in 2001 called "The Witness." She married her childhood sweetheart from first grade, Jeff Adams, on June 24, 1995. She had been a member of the Sorrowful Mother Catholic Church in Vevay, St. Bernard Snake Run Catholic Church in Fort Branch, St. Joseph Cath- olic Church in Princeton and most recently, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pe- tersburg. She loved to read and sew, loved animals, and trea- sured family and friends. She always cared about others, was always doing for others and never thought of herself. She is survived by her hus- band, Jeff, of Petersburg; daughter, Alina Adams, of Pe- tersburg; stepson, Cory (Ky- la) Adams, of Westfield, Ind.; step-grandson, Jeremiah Ad- ams; sister, Donna McKean (Tim), of Polland, Ind.; niec- es, Jessie and Kady McKean; several aunts and uncles; and longtime special friends, Car- ol Riley, of Daleville, Janet Hendricks, of Vevay, Angela Christie, of Union, and Tree- na Coomes, of Glezen. She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Banas; and mother, "Jerry" Geraldine ( Weddle) Banas. A walk-through visitation was from 9 -10 :30 a.m. EDT Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg. A pri- vate family service followed. Burial was at St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Fort Branch. Mathews, 83, of Benton, Ky., passed away peacefully Feb. 22, 2021, at home in Winter Ha- ven, Fla., where he and his wife spent the winter. He was born Nov. 17, 1938, to Paul and Rosemary (Sit- tloh) Mathews. He was mar- ried to Theresa (Shoultz) Mathews for 46 years. He was a proud Army vet- eran, serving in Germany from 1959 through 1962. He was a Past Master of Masonic Lodge #41 in Romeo, Mich., in 1982 and a member of the A zan Shrine in Melbourne, Fla. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Rol- lans College in 1985. He was the owner of Insurance Inc. Agency in Melbourne, Fla., for several years prior to re- tirement. He enjoyed golf and spending time with fam- ily and friends. He is survived by his wife, Theresa; although they never had children together, they share five sons, Robert II, Kevin and William (Butch), all of Arkansas, Roger (Ar- lena) Morton, of Peters- burg, and Michael Camp- ton, of Ohio; sisters-in-law, Lana, Pat and Sue Mathews, all of Richmond, Ind., Nor- ma Leeberg, of Spencer, Gloria Bryant of Sullivan, Ill., and Bonnie Brewster, of Petersburg; brothers-in- law, Doyal (Sharon) Shoul - tz, of Winslow, Carl Shoul- tz of Melbourne, Fla., and Frank ( Woody) Shoultz, of Palm Bay, Fla.; four grand- daughters; two grandsons; three great-grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and many nieces and neph- ews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. He will be laid to rest in Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif., where he will join his wife, Barbara, and son, Charles, Jr. (Chuckie). DANIEL P. YOUNG Daniel P. Young, 87, of Princeton, passed peaceful- ly on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, at his home to go be with his Lord and Savior. He was born April 25, 1933, in Perry County, to Ottis and Cecil Young. He started his working life as a farmhand. He then worked as a logger followed, by many years as a sawmill worker. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Young, of Prince- ton; five children, Dale (Li- sa) Young, of Princeton, Den- nis Young, of Petersburg, Ran- dy Young, of Princeton, San- dy Young (Mark) Boling, of Patoka, and Holly Young, of Princeton; stepson, Larry (Al- annah) Grove; seven grand- children; five step-grandchil- dren; brother, Vernon (Bet- ty) Young, of Princeton; sis- ter, Anna Mae Young Early, of Petersburg; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen Young Pollock; and brother, Ray Young. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2021, at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton, with Pastor Randall Duncan officiating. Burial fol- lowed at Mount Olive Ceme- tery near Mount Olympus. STEPHANIE FAITH ABBOT T Stephanie Faith Abbott, 64, of Dripping Springs, Texas, formerly of Otwell and Jasper, passed away on April 1, 2021, at her home. She was born April 12, 1956, in Jasper, to Lyndon and Billy Jean (Buchta) Abbott. She attended Otwell High School until her junior year, then transferred to Jasper High School, where she grad- uation from in 1974. She always loved working with animals and spent her life being a farrier and rescu- ing French Bulldogs. She is survived by her brother, Aaron (Debbie) Ab- bott, of Washington; sister, Kyra (D.J.) Rose, of St. Augus- tine, Fla.; a niece; great-nieces and nephew; and many other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and grandpar- ents. A graveside memorial will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at Otwell Cem- etery. CARL HUNT ROPP Carl Hunt Ropp, 92, passed away April 17, 2021, in Chey- enne, Wyo. He was born in Glezen on June 18, 1928, to A zel and Ha- zel Ropp. He retired from the Air Force in 1974, after 20 years of service. He then went to work for Kelley's Trailer Sales, where he worked un- til his second retirement. He was a member of the Meth- odist Church and High Plains Drifters Motor Home Club. He was an avid woodworker, and many friends and family mem- bers would benefit from his beautiful creations. He was a Mason and a member of Chey- enne Lodge Number One. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Shannon Ropp, whom he married February 14, 2000 ; his children, Carl (Nancy) Ropp, of Estes Park, Colo., Teresa (Dallas) Rems- berg, of Provo, Utah, Sara (Cary) Weber, of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Edward (Stepha- nie) Ropp, of Platteville, Co- lo; five grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; four stepdaughters, Sherry Gold- man, of Rock Island, Ill., Mar- ilyn Goldman, of Johnstown, Colo., Nancy ( Jeff ) Vitale, of Greeley, Colo., and Becky (Clyde) Stevens, of Gree- ley, Colo.; six step-grandchil- dren; six step-great-grandchil- dren; and one step-great-great grandson. Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Voris Lusk Ropp, whom he married January 13, 1951; his parents; his brother, Ervin Ropp; sister, Irene Ropp Elmore; and his stepson, Buzz Goldman. Masonic burial service and military honors will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 23, 2021, at the Rugged Cross Chapel in Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.
