The public has 30 days from Monday to comment on the matter. "I'm under the impression this isn't a tax increase as we are just going back to the orig- inal number," said Klipsch. A fter three readings of the ordinance, the council voted 5 -0 to approve the ordinance to establish the rate at 0.333. Before it becomes effec- tive, there is a 30 -day remon- strance period. If 10 or more taxpayers in the taxing unit affected by the tax rate in- crease file a petition with the Pike County Auditor within 30 days, it will force the De- partment of Local Govern- ment and Finance to conduct a public hearing on the pro- posed tax rate increase. PARKING VIOLATION FINES DISCUSSED Klipsch said the current parking fine was established decades ago at $ 3. He sug- gested they increase that fine to $20. He explained, along with the $20 fine, there will also be an administration fee of $25. City Attorney Brian Mahoney said he would pre- pare an ordinance establish- ing the new fine. Councilmen recommended to him the fine be $20. In other business, the coun- cil approved a request by Mi- chael Howard for assistance in putting in a new sidewalk. Petersburg budgets $5,000 each year to pay 50 percent of the cost for new sidewalks in- stalled by homeowners. How- ard had an estimated cost of $5,200, which would be a cost of $2,600 for Petersburg. "It is done on a first- come, first-serve basis," said Klipsch. The city recently ap- proved a similar project by Gary Horrall. Klipsch said the projects had depleted the funds for this year. "If we keep getting more requests, we may have to put more in that fund in fu- ture years," said Klipsch, Klipsch said the city was going to put in new fixtures in the bathrooms at Horna- dy Park. Councilman Gary Leavitt said they need to run a sewer line to the park. Klipsch agreed and said they will look into that in the future. He also said there are other neighborhoods outside the city limits they are look- ing to provide sewer to as well. He said engineers are in the process of trying to fig- ure that out. "We used to be in the situ- ation where we couldn't han- dle any more customers, but with the major renovation of Petersburg's sewer treat- ment plant, its capacity will be greatly increased." The next Petersburg City Council meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 3. processor is not as new. The cost of all 30 machines on that bid was $ 35,850. Clauss also recommended purchasing 30 24-inch moni- tors from Shi for a total cost of $ 3,270 total. Claus added the older monitors could be used elsewhere in the corporation. In personnel matters, the board accepted Petersburg Elementary School teacher Jill Estey's retirement. Es- tey started teaching second grade at Petersburg in 1987. She said her last day would be the last day of the 2020 -21 school year. "It has been a blessing to teach in my home communi- ty. . . The children I taught be- came an extension of my own family, I loved them dearly. . . . Not many teachers can say they lost their school in a tor- nado near the beginning of their career and ended their career in a pandemic," wrote Estey in her retirement no- tice. In other personnel matters, Lisa Query resigned as a bus driver and Marva Bradfield re- signed. Chelsea Hornby was hired for the Winslow Elementary School cafeteria and Krystal Moore was hired at Pike Cen- tral in the cafeteria. Krista Roads was hired as an instruction assistant at the middle school. Sydney Brooks was hired as a long-term sub- stitute at the middle school. Also, Alyssa Jenkins was hired as a volunteer track coach for Pike Central. The next school board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 11. MARRIAGE LICENSES Joshua R.
