Postcards this week at Sweets Col- umn, Winslow, IN 47598 were two post- cards and one note. Our note is from Mrs. Connie Mc- Connell Amis, from Princeton, who is proud that her granddaughter, Bel- la Willis, will have a birthday on Au- gust 14. She will be 17 years old and old enough for her driver's license. Bel- la will start 11th grade at Wood Me- morial in Oakland City. Thank you, Connie, for this information and she will be added to my list of birthdays for August. Postcard 661 shows three soldiers, two with rifles in front of a white stone column, with trees and manicured hedges in the background. The say- ing says "Arlington National Ceme- tery. The Tomb of the Unknown Sol- dier, honoring the unnamed dead of America's wars. Erected in 1931 to re- member the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during W WI. The tomb is guarded 24 hours a day by sentinels from the elite 3rd U.S. Infantry." The message on the postcard reads, "Hi, Sweets. We brought three of our nephews to Washington, D.C., to see the nation's capitol and all the sights. My nephews are Brandon, Corey and Parker Goeppner. They also live in Stendal like we do. Max and Cheryl Carlisle. Thanks, Max and Cheryl, for post- card 661. Our nation's capitol must have been quite a history event, see- ing all the sights you only read about. Postcard 662 has a ballerina with a blue tutu, arms over the head and standing on one leg tip-toed. The floor is blue with pink to red colors sur- rounding her. The caption says, "Bal- lerina is from an original foot painting by Simona Atzori." The postcard reads, "Hi, Sweets, enjoy the summer! Janie Tormohlen." Thanks, Janie for postcard 662. It's a lovely painting and we hope your sum- mer is enjoyable also. Winslow Patoka River is still low and the rain we had Monday and Tuesday last week wasn't enough to make the river rise. The temps have risen again and the air conditioners are turned back on. The heat in- dex with humidity was high and sultry. The mosquitoes are still around, but on the Clog the Patoka on July 13, in the park and on the river, they were gone and we were all surprised, but glad. Flow- ers are so colorful in most of the yards and parks, the bees are out doing their thing, and we see our one hummingbird feeding on the three feeders. They love the Rose of Sharons. July 13 was the Clog the Patoka, where you saw some of the 1,119 float- ers in last week's paper. It's amazing to see all the kayaks, boats, blow-ups, Viking ship, pink flamingo, camel, yellow ducky and canoes as they left Winslow to Survant and when all the floaters came into the boat ramp to end their day. I talked to a few float- ers who said they loved the float and it was their first time. We may see them again next year. One couple has float- ed on Pigeon Creek and in Newburgh, but this was their first time on the Pa- toka River. This was quite a site to see all day long and even the dogs had fun. At the boat ramp at Riverside Park, the Patoka Township Fire Dept. Res- cue was there to help the floaters out of the river. Norm helped to carry the canoes up the ramp and helped a few floaters also. Norm helped out as a Winslow Lion and not a fire dept. res- cuer. The Winslow Lions were set up at the shelter house as we served break- fast, which was slow, but the lunch that was served was at times busy. We even had an assembly line and stars waiting patiently for their cheeseburgers. We also had several stars help out in some cooking and serving. We appreciate all the help they gave. Since the floaters got in the river at different times and it takes several hours to float down the river, us Lions stayed until the last of the Kayak Mafia (Clemmy) came in and that was around 8 or 9 p.m. At Miller's Field, the campers start- ed to set up on Friday and some stayed until Sunday because I heard some fireworks coming from that area of town, but didn't see any. The Pike County Chamber of Com- merce was set up somewhere near the bridge or Miller's Field, where they sold T-shirts and ice cream. We would like to congratulate every- one who had a part in this event, if you were a worker or a floater. I do believe everyone had a great time. We all hope to see everyone next year for more fun on the Patoka River. In Winslow on July 19 and 20, was the Heart for a Hero in three area of town. Since this hadn't happened yet as I was writing this column, I will give you that info next week. I had mentioned a few weeks ago that our truck needed some TLC on brakes. Well, it decided it needed some more TLC on back truck tires. So, off to find some tread. It's time to dim the lights on this week's ramblings, but keep an eye on family and friends during these hot and humid days, slow down and see all the wonders of nature, like deer standing in your yard or bunnies and squirrels. Also, slow down for children playing outside. Always smile, wave and say Hi to everyone you see this week.
