PCMS 8th grade girls' basketball team falls at Tecumseh, Jasper The Pike Central Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team slipped to 9 -7 after suffering a 35 -23 loss at Tecumseh on Tuesday, Jan. 8, and a 28 -15 loss at Jasper on Thurs- day, Jan. 9. Tecumseh 35, Pike Central 23 The Lady Chargers scored just two points in each of the first two periods – on baskets by Kahle Young and Ken- nedy Willis – while falling behind 14- 4 at halftime. "We started out slow," Pike Central eighth grade coach Eric Knight said. "It seemed like, during the first quar- ter, we couldn't get a basket to fall." With starting center Chloe Williams sidelined due to illness for the second straight game, Tecumseh was able to dominate the paint from the opening tip. "Tecumseh really hurt us in the pain," Knight said. "They run a high- low offense – feed the high post and then seal off the low and lob down or skip down. That gave them multiple looks at easy bunnies." "We adjusted in the second half and took that away but had to start pressing because of the score. Once we pressed, that opened up some fast-break oppor- tunities for them. We ran out of gas in the fourth quarter." Kahle Young led Pike Central in scoring with eight points while Lib- erty Taylor added five points. Willis and Jaylynn Capehart tossed in four points each. Delaney Welch rounded out the scoring for the Lady Chargers with two points. "The girls never gave up and fought back into the game," Knight said. "That is something this team is real- ly good at. They never quit or give in. They will fight and battle until the end. We just have to start the games out a little better and cut down on the turn- overs and we will be okay." In the seventh grade contest, Brai- ley Mills scored a game-high 13 points to lead Pike Central past Tecumseh 27- 21. Anna Whitehead added six points while Wren Kabrick and Kelby Leighty tossed in four points each. The Lady Chargers improved to 8 -7 with the win. Jasper 28, Pike Central 15 Liberty Taylor scored a team-high seven points as Pike Central dropped a 28 -15 loss at Jasper. Kennedy Willis added four points while Delaney Welch and Kahle Young tossed in two points each. "We started off cold again from the field," said Knight, whose team scored just two points in the first quarter – on a pair of free throws by Taylor – and just two points in the second quarter – on a basket by Young – while falling behind 13-4. "The defense is what kept us in the game. The girls worked their tails off on defense." Knight said that Pike Central was able to cut Jasper's lead to five points with about three minutes left in the fourth period, but turned the ball over on three straight possessions, allowing the Lady Wildcats to extend their lead. "The girls played their hearts out and gave me everything they had, but nothing went our way," Knight said. "Shots didn't fall or rebounds bounced the wrong way. This was a tough loss in our heads and I hope a loss that gets the girls motivated and gets them fired up for conference tourney that's sneak- ing up on us." "Kennedy Willis played awesome de- fense and ran the troops on offense the first half, but had to come sit by me be- cause of foul trouble," Knight added. "Liberty Taylor and Jaylynn Capehart both took turns battling and fighting in the post. With Chloe Williams still sidelined with pneumonia, that makes them two move into the center posi- tion. They both did really good at it." In the seventh grade contest, Wren Kabrick and Brailey Mills scored four points each as Pike Central dropped a 28 -15 loss to Jasper. Kelby Leighty added three points while Shelby Mead- ows and Anna Whitehead pitched in two points each for the Lady Chargers (8 -8).
