Then, after a basket by Scott pulled the Chargers to within 32-16, the Patriots scored eight unanswered points – five by junior Cole Sigler and three by Scher- ry – to take a 40 -16 halftime lead. Heritage Hills would score the first five points of the second half – on a three- point play by Sisley and a basket by Scherry – to cap off a 13-0 scoring run that extended the Patriots' lead to 45 -16. Pike Central would get no closer than 27 points the rest of the game. Scott led the Chargers in scoring (14) and rebounds (6) while Benson and se- nior Judah Leathco add- ed five points each. Soph- omore Sean Hanselman tossed in three points. Gor- by and Kabrick rounded out the scoring for Pike Central with two points each. For the game, the Char- gers made 13 of 38 field goal attempts – a 34.2 percent average – and were 0 -for-2 from the free throw line while turning the ball over a total of 24 times. Heritage Hills, which converted 14 of Pike Cen- tral's turnovers into 30 of- fensive points, out-rebound- ed the Chargers 27-23 while scoring a total of 10 points off of eight offensive re- bounds. The Chargers, mean- while, converted four of the Patriots' eight turnovers into a total of eight points while scoring a total of four points off of seven offensive rebounds. "They really worked it into Sisley and Becher a lit- tle bit, but the one thing I thought, in the half court, we really didn't do too bad," Elliott said. "We could slow them down and play five- on-five half court defense. It was just we might give up an offensive rebound. We didn't always finish it with a rebound like we need to, and size comes into play there." With junior Noah Whann sidelined with a knee inju- ry, Pike Central found itself without another of its start- ing players as senior Aus- tin Holder – who netted 22 points in the Chargers' win at Wood Memorial after missing three games due to a concussion – missed the game due to illness. "That's very tough," El- liott said. "Holder came to me today and said that he was sick, and I just couldn't believe it, with all that he's been through this year. Hopefully, he can get bet- ter and we'll be having him back this weekend. And with Whann's injury, I know it's hurting him, not being able to help us out." "I think we've said we've only played with everybody we started with twice all year, so, you know, it's a lit- tle bit of adversity for us," Elliott added. "But it's giv- ing a lot of kids opportuni- ties to learn and get better and grow." Elliott admitted, how- ever, that the 10 -day lay- off – largely due to inclem- ent weather that forced the postponement of games at Heritage Hills and Boon- ville originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 11, and Sat- urday, Jan. 12, respectively – certainly didn't help the Chargers, who also expe- rienced a 17-day layoff be- tween games in December. "Now's the time where ev- erybody's wanting to play basketball games, and prac- tice isn't something that they're always wanting to do," Elliott said. "It's one of those things where, weath- er-wise, and just kind of how it fell, we ended up not being able to play, and that proba- bly hurt us a little bit." "We had some really good practices early in the week, and it kind of tailed off be- cause ... they were ready to play games," Elliott add- ed. "So that break definite- ly played into this as well." Pike Central will return to action on Friday, Jan. 18, when the Chargers will travel to North Knox (1-12). On Saturday, Jan. 19, Pike Central will host Washing- ton (9 -4), with 2019 Winter Sports Homecoming Queen festivities taking place be- tween the junior varsity and varsity contests. The back-to-back games will be the first time during the regular season – out- side of the 2018 Old Nation- al Bank Holiday Classic at North Daviess in late De- cember – that the Chargers have played on back-to-back nights. "We better get used to it, because we play back- to-back, Friday and Satur- day, the rest of the way out here," Elliott said. "It's a great opportunity. Travel- ing to North Knox, play- ing away, is always a chal- lenge, and then Washington is definitely a good ball club. We're going to have to come out ready to go." • • • In the junior varsity con- test, junior Cayden Kratzer scored a game-high 14 points to lead Heritage Hills to a 44-25 victory over Pike Central.
