PCMS 8th grade girls' basketball team drops 27-20 loss at Southridge The Pike Central Middle School eighth grade girls' bas- ketball team slipped to 9 -8 after suffering a 27-20 loss at South- ridge on Monday, Jan. 14. "It was another game we let slip through our hands," Lady Chargers eighth grade coach Eric Knight said. "Turnovers and rebounding were a big fac- tor in this game. It seems like we played defense the whole night." Falling behind 8 -4 in the first quarter, Pike Central rallied to within three points – at 12-9 – at halftime. However, Southridge outscored the Lady Chargers 7- 4 in the third period to extend its lead to 19 -13 heading into the final quarter. "Late in the third quarter, Southridge knocked down a big three by Ara Wagner and the momentum went their way," Knight said. "We battled late in the fourth to stay in the game but came up short. Late game turnovers and missed rebounds hurt us again." Liberty Taylor paced Pike Cen- tral with seven points while Kah- le Young added five points. Del- aney Welch and Keena Young tossed in four points each. "The girls know what we need to work on and we will continue to work and improve," Knight said. "Tourney ball is just around the corner and, hopeful- ly, the shots start falling so we can gain back some confidence and play ball like we know we can." Knight noted that Pike Cen- tral will be recognizing its eighth graders at its last reg- ular-season home game on Thursday, Jan. 17, against South Knox. "It will be a big game for the girls and one that means a lot when it's the last regular-season ballgame you will ever play in that gym," Knight said. "Hope- fully, they will take this game to heart and come out ready to play." Tip-off for the seventh grade contest is set for 6 p.m., with the eighth grade game to follow.
