The sectional tournament will be held on Wednesday, May 16, and Thursday, May 17, at Jasper. Kirby places first in pole vault at Pioneer Invitational with personal-best leap of 13 feet, 6 inches Sophomore Tyler Kirby set a new personal record to win the pole vault competition as the Pike Central High School boys' track and field team finished third in the Pioneer Invitational at Boonville on Tuesday, May 1. Kirby, who leaped a per- sonal-best 13 feet, 3 inches, to place first in the pole vault competition at the Prince- ton Invitational on Wednes- day, April 25, cleared 13 feet, 6 inches, just six inches less than the school record of 14 feet set in 2002 by Eric Knight, who serves as a vol- unteer assistant coach for the high school track programs. Senior Gavin Boyd, mean- while, placed second in pole vault with a personal-best ty- ing leap of 13 feet. "Gavin and Tyler have been doing an excellent job at pole vault for us for most of the sea- son," Chargers head coach Chris Kramer said. "They have been working hard in practice and Coach Knight has been doing a great job of working with them. They have some potential, with some small corrections, to contin- ue clearing higher heights, so we are excited to see what the rest of this season will be like for both of them." Placing third in an individu- al event for the Chargers was freshman Garrett Boyd in the 100 -meter dash with a time of 12.75 seconds. Placing fourth in individual events for the Chargers were freshman Colt Armstrong in the 200 -meter dash with a time of 24.30 seconds; ju- nior Colton Carpenter in the 400 -meter dash with a time of 57.51 seconds and in long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 4-1/2 inches; freshman Ijaa Chambers in the 800 -me- ter run with a time of 2:20 ; sophomore Sam Theising in the 110 -meter high hurdles with a time of 18.50 seconds; and sophomore Nate Wool- ery in the 1,600 -meter run with a time of 4:50 and in the 3,200 -meter run with a time of 11:27. Placing fifth in individu- al events for the Chargers were Armstrong in high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches; Chambers in the 1,600 -meter run with a time of 4:55; The- ising in the 300 -meter hur- dles with a time of 48.10 sec- onds; junior Andrew Krieg in shot put with a personal-best throw of 40 feet, 7-1/2 inches and in discus with a throw of 110 feet; and junior Jacob Vest in the 400 -meter dash with a personal-best time of 58.20 seconds. In addition, the team of Armstrong, Boyd, Tyler Kir- by and Theising placed sec- ond in the 400 -meter relay with a time of 46.25 seconds; the team of junior Christian Benson, sophomore A.J. Hill and freshmen Colson Dil- lard and Sam Jones placed third in the 3,200 -meter re- lay with a time of 10 :01; and the team of Armstrong, Car- penter, Theising and fresh- man Ethan Huck placed third in the 1,600 -meter relay with a time of 3:54.24. Also posting personal-best performances but not placing were Jones in the 3,200 -me- ter run with a time of 12:38; freshman Reece Ashley in the 400 -meter dash with a time of 1:01.70 ; sophomore Alec Frederick in discus with a throw of 89 feet, 2 inches; freshman Lane Potts in the 800 -meter run with a time of 2:30 ; sophomore Paxton Thorne in the 100 -meter dash with a time of 13.22 seconds; and freshman Trent Zimmer- man in the 3,200 -meter run with a time of 12:36. As a team, Pike Central scored 41 points, trailing Jas- per (119 points) and Boonville (64). Evansville Day School was fourth with zero points. The Chargers will return to action on Thursday, May 10, when they will compete in the Pocket Athletic Con- ference Championship Meet at Tell City. Andy Heuring photo SPORTS BRIEFS Sports physicals for PCMS, PCHS to be conducted May 9 Annual sports physi- cals for any student-ath- letes going into grades six through 12 for the 2018 -19 school year will be conducted on Wednes- day, May 9, at Pike Cen- tral Middle School. The physicals will be conducted from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at a cost of $15 (cash or check made payable to PC Athletics). The sign-up location will be at Pike Central Middle School's main entrance. Students will be re- quired to sign in with their payment and will be seen on a first-come, first- served basis. Students participating in a PCSC home sporting event during the time physicals are being conducted will be worked in accordingly with the coach if it is pos- sible. Physicals include mea- surement of height, weight, blood pressure, a vision screening and a physical evaluation per- formed by a local health care provider. An IHSA A physical form – including the histo- ry, consent, acknowledge- ment and release – must be completed and signed by a parent or legal guard- ian and the student if the student is under the age of 18. The form will be avail- able that evening or can be picked up in advance at the athletic department, any school nurse's office or at www.ihsaa.org. The physical form will be kept on file at school with a copy of the exam and will be provided to any parent upon request. Students obtaining a sports physical exam from their personal healthcare provider for the 2018 -19 school year must use the IHSA A form. For the IH- SA A form to be valid for the 2018 -19 school year, it cannot be competed before April 1, 2018. The form must be signed by a personal healthcare pro- vider. Other forms will not be accepted. A sports physical form must be on file in order for a student to participate in any sport during the 2018 - 19 school year and also to participate in summer workouts in 2018. This will be the only time sports physicals will be conducted at Pike Cen- tral Middle School or Pike Central High School for the 2018 -19 school year. Participation is not man- datory. It is offered to as- sist students and families that otherwise would pay a higher cost for a sports physical. Pike Central Youth Wrestling Camp to be held in July Wrestlers who are inter- ested in improving their skills and knowledge of the sport are invited to participate in the Pike Central Youth Wrestling Camp. The wrestling camp is for students who will be in kindergarten or first through sixth grades in the 2018-19 school year. The camp will run from Monday, July 16, to Fri- day, July 20, from 6-7:10 p.m., at the Pike Central High School gym. The wrestling finale will be held on Wednesday, July 25, at 6 p.m. In-person sign-ups will be held Tuesday, May 22, and Thursday, May 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Pike Central High School gym. The sign-up fee is $45 ($25 for any additional siblings) and includes a T-shirt and a medal. Pike Central Grils' Volleyball camp to be held June 11-15 Girls who will be enter- ing fourth through eighth grades this fall will have a chance to learn about volleyball or improve the skills they already have during the Pike Central Girls' Volleyball Camp, which will be Monday, June 11, through Friday, June 15, in the Pike Cen- tral High School gym. Pike Central High School head volleyball coach Brandi Chestnut will be conducting two separate camps. Girls entering fourth, fifth and sixth grades will have camp from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. each day, and girls entering seventh and eighth grades will have camp from 9:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $20 per girl and includes a volleyball and t-shirt. Lady Charger Basketball Camp set for June 25-28 Girls who will be enter- ing third through eighth grades this fall will have a chance to improve their skills and learn more about basketball during the Lady Chargers Bas- ketball Camp, which will be held from Monday, June 25, through Thurs- day, June 28, at Pike Cen- tral High School. Pike Central High School head coach Kyle McCutchan and his staff will be conducting two separate camps. The first will be for incoming 3rd through 5th graders from 6 -7 p.m. The sec- ond will be for incoming 6th through 8th graders from 7-8 p.m. The camp will focus on fundamentals and learn- ing the game of basket- ball. There will be games and contests each day. Each camper will receive individual instruction from coaching staff and high school players. The cost is $20 per play- er, or $ 35 for two players from the same family, and includes a camp t-shirt. Forms are available at each school's office.
