Poplar Street, Petersburg Chargers to open sectional baseball tourney against Washington The Pike Central High School baseball team will take on Washington in the opening round of the Class 3A Sectional 31 tournament at Vincennes Lincoln, the IHSA A announced on Sun- day, May 6. The Chargers will battle the Hatchets on Wednesday, May 23, at 6 p.m. Pike Cen- tral opened the season with a 12-1 loss at Washington on March 30. The Pike Central-Wash- ington winner will advance to the sectional semifinals on Monday, May 28, to face the host Alices at 1 p.m., Eastern time. The other semifinal contest, pitting Princeton against Gibson Southern, is set to start at 11 a.m., Eastern time. The championship game is set for Monday, May 28, at 7 p.m., Eastern time. The 64 sectional survi- vors will advance to a four- team regional on Saturday, June 2. Two semifinal games will be played early that day at each site with the two win- ners returning for a cham- pionship game that evening. The 16 regional winners will be assigned to four semi- state sites and play a sin- gle game on Saturday, June 9, with the winners moving into their respective state championship game. This year's four state championship games, scheduled for Friday, June 15, and Saturday, June 16, will be played at Victory Field in Indianapolis, home of the Triple-A franchise In- dianapolis Indians. Jacob Bohnert – who holds the school records in the 200 -yard freestyle, the 100 -yard backstroke, the 100 -yard butterfly and the 100 -yard freestyle – said he made the decision to sign with Iowa Lakes after vis- iting the school's campus during spring break. "We went to a college (sister) Nat(alie) is looking at in North Dakota, I think, or South Dakota," Jacob Bohnert said. "Iowa Lakes e- mailed us and told us about it, and they have the pro- gram – electrical technolo- gy – that I wanted to go for ... and it just went from there." Vinnedge won the event with a throw of 83 feet, 6 -1.2 inches to beat Gibson South- ern eighth grader Aubrey McBride – who placed second with a throw of 76 feet, 5 inches – by more than seven feet. Placing fifth in individual events for the Lady Chargers were eighth grader Kya Leighty placed fifth in high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 4 inches; and eighth grad- er Kenzie Woodland in long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 4 inches. Seventh grader Kennedy Willis placed seventh in the 1,600 -meter run with a time of 5:56.89, breaking her own school record for seventh graders of 5:58.98 she set on April 21 in the Princeton Invitation- al. The school record for eighth graders is 5:58, set by Abby Hillyard in 2013. Willis also finished 10th in the 800 -me- ter run with a time of 2:50.04. Also placing seventh in individu- al events for the Lady Chargers were eighth grader Woodland in the 200 -me- ter dash who – after finishing sixth in pre- liminaries with a time of 31.23 seconds – Trailing 6 -5 after four innings, Gibson Southern scored 10 unanswered runs to post a 15 -6 victory over host Pike Central in high school baseball action on Tuesday, May 1. A fter giving up three runs in the first inning – two on run-scoring singles by right fielder Cody Hupp and third baseman Taylor Lintzenich and one on a throwing error – the Char- gers rallied for three runs in the second inning to tie the score at 3-3. Following a lead-off dou- ble by catcher Brennon Benton, an error by Titans shortstop Adolfo Munoz allowed junior shortstop Race Britton to reach first base as Benton remained at second. A fter Benton and Brit- ton advanced to third and second, respectively, on a ground-out by junior first baseman Kyle Williams, Benton scored on a wild pitch to cut Gibson South- ern's lead to 3-1. Following a two-out walk to junior left fielder Draven Huff, sophomore center- fielder Connor O'Neal sin- gled, driving in Britton to pull the Chargers to with- in 3-2. Pike Central subsequent- ly tied the score at 3-3 when Huff scored on an error by Munoz on a ball hit by ju- nior third baseman Brax- ton Rice. Both teams scored on runs in the third inning – on a fielder's choice grounder by centerfielder Mitch Spindler for Gibson Southern and an RBI-sin- gle by Britton – to send the game into the fourth inning tied at 4-4. A fter the Titans scored By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Eighth graders Wyatt Frasure and Remington Gideon won one individual event each as the Pike Central Mid- dle School boys' track and field team finished fourth in the Pocket Athletic Conference Junior High Champion- ship Meet on Saturday, May 5, at Forest Park. Frasure, after placing first during preliminaries for the 100 -meter dash with a time of 12.59 seconds, took first place in the finals with a time of 12.61 seconds – one-hundreth of a second ahead of Southridge eighth grader Aiden Jochem, who posted a time of 12.62 sec- onds. Frasure also placed second in the 200 -meter dash with a time of 25.86 seconds – after placing third in preliminaries with a time of 26.76 seconds – and was sixth in long jump with a personal-best leap of 15 feet, 7 inches. Gideon, meanwhile, placed first in discus with a sea- son-best throw of 115 feet, 2 inches, besting his previ- ous season-best mark of 110 feet, 8 inches. Heritage Hills eighth grader Alex Schaeffer placed second with a throw of 111 feet. Gideon also placed third in shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 6 inches. Seventh grader Peyton Howald, after placing fourth in preliminaries for the 110 -meter hurdles with a time of 19.71 seconds, took fourth place in the finals with a time of 19.34 seconds. Peyton Howald also placed eighth in the 300 -meter hurdles with a season-best time of 51.16 seconds, and tied with Gibson Southern eighth grader Rory Heltsley for 12th place in high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 6 inches. In addition, seventh grader Cole Parks placed fourth in the 400 -meter dash with a season-best time of 1:01.49. Parks also finished 15th in long jump with a lap of 12 feet, 6 inches.
