Photo courtesy of Inter-State Studio ing – which was held in Pike Central High School's distance learning lab – was bittersweet. "Yeah, but, you know, he's ready, so it's time to head to that next step," Mike Bohnert said. "The main thing is the schooling, and he found a school with the classes he was wanting to take, so it worked out re- ally well for him." Jacob's mother, Beth, who also serves as an assis- tant coach for the Pike Cen- tral boys' and girls' swim- ming team, said that her son had been considering going to Vincennes Univer- sity, which, while it does of- fer an electrical technology program, it doesn't have a swim team. "We were pretty set on going there, and then over spring break, we decided to make a trip out west," Beth Bohnert said. "The coach e-mailed us just be- fore we left, and I really think that's the place he needs to be." Iowa Lakes Community College – located in pictur- esque Iowa's Great Lakes region – offers a two-year associate in applied sci- ence degree in electrical technology at its campus in Estherville, Iowa. "They have an excel- lent electrical school – a lot of new items, like, right outside the door, there's a wind turbine, and the buildings have got a lot of solar power, that sort of thing," Beth Bohnert said. "Even if he wasn't going to swim, I think he really en- joyed that whole school. But he was going to miss swimming, so I'm thrilled that he actually gets to go and do what he loves." "It was either not swim and go to Vincennes, or get to do what he loves, and go to Iowa," she added. "So, we'll be making some trips – long-distance trips – for a while." Mike Bohnert agreed. "We'll get to enjoy an- other couple of years," he said. "It's a long trip, but we'll make a few of them." Jacob Bohnert, 18, said that Iowa Lakes Commu- nity College's location – which is about a 700 -mile drive from his parents' home south of Petersburg – wasn't a factor in his de- cision. "I think it was a good decision," Jacob Bohnert said. "I don't really have a problem with the distance." "Mom might," he added. "I don't.
