The Lady Chargers belt- ed out 11 hits and drew three walks while Vincennes Clark committed three er- rors. Leading Pike Central of- fensively was eighth grader Avery Hunt, who had three hits – a single, a double and her first Lady Charger home run, a grand slam. Seventh grader Delaney Welch had two hits, both singles. Seventh grader Alyna Sharp belted her first La- dy Charger home run while eighth graders Sophie Car- nahan and Brynn Hillyard hit one double each. Collect- ing one single apiece were eighth grader Hallie Bailey and seventh graders Mad- elyn Fiscus and Chloe Wil- liams. Hillyard picked up the win for Pike Central, allow- ing four runs – all earned – on seven hits while striking out seven in three innings. Carnahan pitched the final inning, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out one. Pike Central's B-team also improved to 9 -0 with a 13-2 four-inning victory over the Lady Alices, col- lecting 13 hits and drawing six walks. Sixth graders Brailey Mills and Karley Kavana- ugh and seventh grader Madelyn Fiscus had two sin- gles each. Sixth grader Lex- ie Onyett had a double while seventh grader Chloe Wil- lis, sixth grader Macey Stil- well, seventh grader Tessa Vinnedge, sixth grader Zara Sallee, sixth grader Haylie Fulcher and sixth grader Kelby Leighty had one sin- gle apiece. The winning picture was Kavanaugh, who allowed no runs on one hit and struck out one in two innings. On- yett pitched the final two in- nings, allowing two runs – both earned – on two hits. Pike Central, which played at Heritage Hills on Monday, May 7, will close out the season with road games against Jasper on Tuesday, May 8, South- ridge on Monday, May 14, and Barr-Reeve on Wednes- day, May 16. Pike Central's lead to 2-0. A fter South Spencer scored twice in the sixth in- ning to tie the score at 2-2, Lady Charger senior third baseman Jalah Barnes sin- gled to lead off the bottom of the frame and advanced to second when the next bat- ter, senior pitcher Peyton Sorgius, drew a walk. Sophomore right fielder Lauren Vaughn then laid down a sacrifice bunt that Cook fielded and threw past first base, allowing Barnes to score the tie-breaking run. Sorgius, who had held the Lady Rebels hitless for the first five innings, gave up a one-out single to left fielder Cali Woodburn in the top of the seventh inning, but got catcher Jordan Deming to hit a comebacker to Sorgius, who threw the ball to Stone for the force-out at second base. Sorgius then retired the next batter – shortstop Ash- ton Rasor – on a comeback- er to Sorgius, who threw the ball to Croak for the game-ending out at first base. "You only get so many opportunities, and whoev- er cashes in on them wins the game," said Pike Cen- tral head coach Rick Weis- man, whose team won its fifth straight game to im- prove to 8 -4 overall and 2-1 in the Pocket Athletic Con- ference. "All we had to do was put the ball down and let them do all the running, catching and doing all that," Weis- man said. "That helps, if you keep them on edge, other than just the pitcher-catch- er back and forth." Prior to the fifth inning, the Lady Chargers had their best opportunity to score n the second inning, when back-to-back hits – a dou- ble by Sorgius and a single by Vaughn – put runners at second and third bases with one out. However, South Spencer pitcher Morgan Schuetter retired Carnahan and senior catcher Lexi Halbrader on back-to-back infield pop-ups to end the threat. "We had chances earlier in the game where we just couldn't get a hit," Weis- man said. "It seemed like we were trying to figure out, okay, what did she do to me the last time I was at bat, and then try to fig- ure out what she's coming with this time. Later in the game, we got better quality at-bats than we did the first time through, which is real- ly what you strive for as the game goes on." Sorgius, who went 2-for-2 at the plate while drawing one walk, went the distance for the Lady Chargers, al- lowing two runs – one of which was earned – on on four hits while walking three and striking out sev- en. "I thought it was one of her better games she's had," Weisman said of Sorgius. "I thought she might have had a little more pop to the ball than normal. I don't know whether keeping her out one game – the Vincennes game – to give her a little rest helped her out or not. It seemed like she came back kind of fired up." With the loss, South Spen- cer fell to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the PAC. In the junior varsity game, freshman Riley Mor- gan went 2-for-3, scored one run and drove in three to lead Pike Central to a 10 -6 victory over South Spencer. Sophomore Madison War- ner was 1-for-1 with a dou- ble, scored on run and drove in two, while sophomore Al- izé Padgett went 1-for-3,with two runs batted in. Padgett also allowed six runs – four of which were earned – on seven hits while striking out five in five in- nings. However, Gibson South- ern would score four runs in the fifth inning – aided by three Charger errors and a pair of wild pitches – to take a 9 -6 lead. A fter scoring another run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Spindler, the Titans plated five more runs in the seventh inning to take a 15 - 6 lead.
